Job Description

The modern electrical grid is increasingly seeing a rise in adoption of DERs like roof-top solar PVs, community level PV plants, home storage battery systems, commercial scaled battery systems in the distribution grid. In this new paradigm, the bi-directional flow of power poses a challenge for utility companies to maintain voltage stability. A related challenge is stable operation of distribution grid as large number of EVs draw power from the grid at the same time. New market players have emerged in the form of Aggregators and VPP (Virtual Power Plant) operators, that combine these DERs and provide an aggregated service to the Utility company or/and participate in Energy markets as a combined entity.

We are looking for a graduate student with strong background in power systems, energy markets and optimal power flow (OPF) formulations to join our team focused on developing solutions for stable and economical operation of electrical grid with new market players like energy aggregators and VPPs.

Qualifications:

• Pursuing a PhD/Masters in Electrical Engineering, Controls and Optimization or related field.  

• Minimum GPA of 4.0/5.0

• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.

• Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Skills:

• Scientific curiosity and willingness to explore, learn, and innovate.

• Experience with OPF formulations (ACOPF, DCOPF).

• Strong background in power systems.

• Understanding of Energy markets and its operation.

• Strong background in mathematical optimization

• Proficiency in Matlab, Simulink, Python, or Julia, with experience in scientific computing libraries.

The weekly base pay range for this position is $1,000-$2,000 weekly. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position will be posted until at least 9/23/2025.

This position is also eligible for:

• Relocation Assistance: Co-op/Interns will be reimbursed for reasonable, proper, and documented expenditures incurred while initially reporting to work and returning to school/home upon completion of the assignment. Employees with a permanent address greater than 50 miles away from the work location are eligible.

• Housing Allowance: Co-op/Interns employees receive a weekly housing allowance to help off-set living expenses when the co-op/Intern’s permanent residence is at least 50 miles away from the work location.
