JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

We are searching for an Occupational Safety/Environmental Health Intern to join our Safety Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). 

You will:

  • Provide support to ARL Environmental Health and Safety Programs

  • Assist with implementation of ARL Safety's program management software

  • Update Emergency Response Plans, conducting drills and responding to incidents

  • Ensure chemical safety in ARL facilities through maintenance of Safety Data Sheet database and chemical inventories

  • Maintain supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and First Aid Supplies and distribute

  • Proactively promote safety programs through regular e-mail publicity, postings and focused meetings

  • Respond to ARL employee questions/concerns about environmental health and safety issues

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Valid driver’s license with successful completion of a background and motor vehicle records check

  • Ability to lift and move containers that may weigh up to 35 pounds

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Programs

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Conducting inventory, testing, and/or inspections of safety equipment

  • Conducting data management, entry, and reporting

  • Researching safety issues and recommending corrective actions

  • Assisting in the development of safety training

  • Currently enrolled as a student with The Pennsylvania State University; preferably in a safety-related course of study

  • Active government security clearance (Secret)

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.All positions at ARL require candidates to possess the ability to obtain a government security clearance; you will be notified during the interview process if this position is subject to a government background investigation.  You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.  Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
