Job Description

The intern will work with the Neuroscience Bioinformatics team of the Genomics Research Center (GRC) at AbbVie. The GRC is a multidisciplinary center of excellence with expertise in genomic technologies and their application, human genetics, genomic medicine, computational analysis, data integration, genome biology, and application of functional genomics.   

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Curate and preprocess neuroscience-relevant perturb-seq data for LLM model training  
  • Fine-tune single-cell foundation model using perturb-seq data 
  • Train and validate classifier to predict gene perturbations from transcriptomic profiles 
  • Simulate reversal of transcriptomic disease state based on disease-specific gene expression signatures and pathways 
  • Consistent collaboration with Neuroscience colleagues to determine transcriptomic disease signatures and prioritize genes for follow-up experiments 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in bioinformatics, AI/ML, computational biology or other related field 
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship  
  • Expected graduation date between December 2026 – July 2027 (2028 PhD) 
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or R  
  • Experience in deep learning/machine learning and TensorFlow or PyTorch 
  • Exposure to bioinformatics 
  • Strong written, verbal and oral communication skills, good self-organization  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Exposure to RNA-seq and/or DNA-seq analysis 
  • Experience with computational biology 
  • Exposure to neuroscience projects
