Our Events and Sales Internship gives you hands-on experience creating unforgettable guest experiences—from private parties to major zoo-wide celebrations. You’ll learn the ins and outs of sales, client relations, budgeting, and event execution—all while surrounded by amazing animals and passionate people. Employment Status: Part-time Temporary 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Duration: 12 weeks - Starting on 01/26/2025

Schedule: Spring 2026

Compensation: $14.00/hr

Department: PR/Marketing

Direct Supervisor: Jenna Dodson, Events and Group Sales Manager

Primary Work Location: Zoo settings both indoors and outdoors

Certification: Completion of assigned OKC Zoo HSI training in the first two weeks of employment. 

Other: This position is subject to pre-employment and/or periodic background checks. 

Internship Summary: The Events and Sales Internship will introduce the world of events and sales, especially in the field of Zoos and attractions, to prospective industry members. This position will prepare intern in sales processes, client relationship management, revenue and expense budget management, event planning and execution, and communication strategies.
 

Development Outcomes 

An intern in this position will complete assigned tasks resulting in the following learning outcomes

  • Intern will develop understanding of events and sales department operations and how it fits within the OKC Zoo organization and helps fulfill mission   
  • Intern will learn how to effectively and persuasively communicate details and logistics of events and admissions to prospective clients, learning how to promote Zoo as venue
  • Intern will develop an understanding of profit and loss statements and budget management and revenue reporting through Microsoft Excel
  • Intern will create function sheets, setup materials and day-of information to ensure accuracy 
  • Intern will review current private and public event offerings and recommend areas of growth
  • Intern will create and send proposals and invoices to prospective clients
  • Intern will be involved in cross-functional department meetings to share details of upcoming events and happenings
  • Intern will be involved in pre-event planning, serve as on-site representative for private events
  • Intern will complete a proposal for a new public event that connects guests with the Zoo's mission and generates revenue

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Commitment of designated schedule
  • Current college or graduate student pursuing an applicable degree, recent graduate of an applicable degree, or relevant education with interest in transitioning into an applicable career
  • Interest in pursuing career in event management or sales
  • Have the ability to work well in a busy and fast paced environment
  • Provide own housing and transportation

Physical Demands

  • Walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Push, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and move intermittently throughout the day.
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, moving mechanical parts, and vehicles.
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow and ice. 
  • Exposure to potentially dangerous animals.
