Job Description:

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) Uniform Business Office (UBO) and Data Quality Control Management (DQMC) Internship Program offers students an immersive experience in federal consulting and healthcare business operations. Through hands-on projects, interns will support Tria Federal’s DHA UBO contract team in advancing the operational efficiency and data quality of the Military Health System (MHS).

This internship provides the opportunity to strengthen analytical, communication, and project-management skills while gaining exposure to the federal healthcare ecosystem and the consulting process from concept through deliverable development.

Internship Objective:
The DHA UBO/DQMC Contract Support Internship is designed to provide a comprehensive, real-world consulting experience. Interns will contribute to analytical, operational, and strategic initiatives that enhance data integrity, improve business processes, and support effective communication across the DHA UBO enterprise. Participants will develop professional consulting skills and contribute tangible value to the contract team while learning how data informs decision-making in a federal health context.

In addition to general consulting experience, this program offers exposure to revenue-cycle operations and analytics, providing interns with insight into the financial and operational systems that support the Military Health System. This includes assisting with data review, process improvement, and operational research aligned with revenue integrity and billing processes.

Networking & Professional Opportunities:
Interns will collaborate with Tria consultants, DHA stakeholders, and UBO staff to support active projects within the UBO/DQMC contract and participate in:

  • Regular project and leadership meetings.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with Tria consultants and DHA teams.
  • Mentorship opportunities with Tria’s Military and Veteran Health (MVH) leaders.
  • Access to a professional network in federal consulting and healthcare operations.

Professional Development Goals:
Throughout the internship, participants will:

  • Gain exposure to the DHA UBO mission, revenue-cycle operations, and federal health business processes.
  • Develop data-analysis and visualization skills using tools such as Power BI and Excel.
  • Learn fundamentals of federal consulting, project management, and client engagement.
  • Strengthen written and verbal communication skills for professional and technical audiences.
  • Build professional networks with Tria consultants and DHA UBO team members.

Basic Requirements (Skills and Capabilities):

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Familiarity with data-visualization platforms such as Power BI preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and curious; demonstrates initiative, adaptability, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a virtual or hybrid team environment.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Business, Finance, Data Analytics, Public Health, Health Administration, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Prior coursework or internship in data analysis, business operations, or healthcare administration preferred.
  • U.S. citizenship required; ability to pass a background check.

Responsibilities:

Interns will collaborate with Tria consultants, DHA stakeholders, and UBO staff to support active projects within the UBO/DQMC contract. Work will focus on:

  • Data Analytics & Visualization: Supporting development of tools and dashboards that enhance performance tracking and transparency.
  • Business Process Improvement: Assisting with research and analysis that identify opportunities for improved data accuracy, workflow efficiency, and business reporting.
  • Strategic Research: Conducting comparative research, benchmarking, and analysis of federal healthcare operations to inform recommendations.
  • Education & Communication: Contributing to internal and external communication materials, knowledge-sharing resources, and stakeholder engagement tools.
  • Revenue Cycle Support: Supporting analytical and research efforts related to revenue-cycle operations, including charge capture, billing, reimbursement, and compliance within the Military Health System.
  • Emerging Technology Exploration: Leveraging tools such as Generative AI, Machine Learning (ML), or Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to streamline workflows, automate insights, and support documentation.

Example Project Areas:

  • Enhancing performance dashboards and metrics visualization for operational and revenue-cycle reporting.
  • Supporting research and data collection for business-process and revenue-cycle improvement initiatives.
  • Assisting with modernization efforts for UBO communication materials/strategy and knowledge-management platforms.
  • Exploring automation or AI-driven solutions for data organization and reporting.
  • Developing research summaries and strategic insights to inform DHA decision-making.

Expected Outcomes & Deliverables:

By the completion of the internship, participants will have contributed to a portfolio of professional consulting deliverables, including:

  • Analytical findings, visuals, or dashboards supporting key performance or revenue-cycle measures.
  • Process documentation or recommendations for workflow enhancements.
  • Research briefs or summary reports supporting program decision-making.
  • Communication products or educational resources supporting stakeholder engagement.
