The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking to create a pipeline for the next generation of arts journalists. The position will be based with Datebook, our guide to arts, entertainment and culture in the Bay Area covering film, music, theater and more. Your role will require brainstorming, researching and writing, but may also include art directing collaborators and project coordination.

All college students, including community college students or students who will have recently completed their associate or bachelor's degree, are encouraged to apply.

Selected candidates will receive training and mentoring from editors and colleagues across departments.

Requirements and internship details:

  • Must be able to work out of the San Francisco and greater Bay Area.
  • Weekend, evening and holiday work will be required as events warrant.
  • 40 hours a week for 12 weeks.
  • This paid internship typically goes from June to August, though a later start and/or end date may be negotiated. The hourly rate is $19.18/hr.
  • Deadline to apply: November 2, 2025.

Responsibilities:

  • Report on breaking news and trending topics as it relates to the Bay Area arts community.
  • Report and write news features and reviews for the Chronicle that reflect the diversity of the arts and audiences in the Bay Area.
  • Collaborate closely with editors to conceptualize coverage and enhance writing skills.

What we're looking for:

  • An intern with endless curiosity and a proactive attitude.
  • Someone who believes in the arts and is hungry to chase stories that haven't been told.
  • Someone eager to develop skills that engage readers through compelling headlines, visuals, graphics and other multimedia.
  • Strong writing skills are important, as is a dedication to accuracy, fairness and inclusiveness.
  • Newsroom experience with a high school and/or college publication or previous internships strongly preferred.

Please submit a one-page cover letter along with a portfolio of your work. Include brief explanations of your role in the execution of the pieces in your portfolio.
