Job Description

Predict the future. And protect it
Love maths and critical thinking? Step this way.

Make sure our insurance decision makers have all the facts and stats they need. Help us keep on the right track while protecting 28 million customers.

Actuaries don’t have crystal balls. But they do have sharp brains, serious maths skills and the tech to see around corners. They’re the people who spot what’s coming - from how long people might live, how often accidents might happen, to how markets may behave and shift.

They make sure the financial promises we make today still stand decades from now.

And if you join us as an Actuarial apprentice, you won’t just watch it happen. You’ll be in the mix, shaping the big calls sooner than you think.

Your all‑access pass to Actuarial
This is your pass to experience one of the most influential careers in Finance.

You’ll rotate through different teams, spending about 18 months in each. Each placement gives you the chance to build hands-on experience and see just how broad and impactful actuarial work can be.

You could be:

  • Pricing insurance, pensions and investments using specialist techniques to make sure we’re fair and competitive.
  • Calculating reserves and capital so we can pay out future claims when our customers need us most.
  • Using actuarial and statistical modelling techniques to understand and prepare for a wide range of risks.
  • Designing and developing actuarial models and software to predict outcomes and guide decisions.
  • Analysing past data and trends to set smart assumptions that power our models.
  • Optimising investment strategies to keep us aligned with regulatory requirements and risk appetite.
  • Explaining complex concepts to stakeholders and presenting financial results that influence strategic thinking.

And yes, sometimes it’ll be your job to translate all that into plain English for colleagues and leaders. (Because not everyone speaks fluent “actuarial.” Yet.)

Skills for now. Skills for life
You’ll nail how to create, verify and review accurate, timely financial information while working with the latest and greatest tools and tech: Excel/VBA, Python, R, Prophet and Power BI.

Along the way, you’ll level up your maths, problem-solving, data storytelling and communication skills. And get the confidence to explain complex ideas simply (which is super useful for any career).

We’re modernising how we work, too. Creating a more agile, automated and insight-driven environment. You’ll be part of that transformation, helping us improve how we use data and models across the business.

And because we believe talent belongs in the spotlight, you’ll have plenty of chances to show what you can do. Whether that’s finding a smarter way to run a model or presenting your insight to the people making the big decisions.

Your future, fully funded
You’ll start earning a good salary from the moment you join, while working towards the level 4 Actuarial Technician apprenticeship.

From there, you’ll move on to a degree-level programme with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) - and could go all the way to Fellowship status, with high earning potential and strong long-term career prospects.

Your training - fully funded with a generous study package: study days, tutorials, materials, exams and professional subscriptions - the whole kit and kaboodle.

Plus, you’ll be backed by mentors, local education leads and a close-knit actuarial community that’s ready to help you smash it.

By the end, you won’t just understand actuarial work. You’ll have the skills, qualifications and confidence to make a career-defining impact. And you’ll have played a vital role in Helping Britain Prosper.

Requirements

What you’ll need to apply

  • You’ll need to be at least 18 years old on 1st September 2026
  • GCSEs at grade 4 – 9 in both Maths and English - Obtained
  • 3 A Levels at grade BCC including a B in Maths - These grades can be predicted, but any offer made to you will be conditional upon successful achievement of these qualifications

Important information

An additional requirement for the apprenticeship position is that you must currently possess a valid Right to Work in the UK. Your visa end date must extend beyond the duration of the apprenticeship programme, which will last up to five years.

Due to Home Office requirements regarding Skilled Workers, we’re unable to accept applications for visa sponsorship for our apprenticeship roles as the proposed salary for the role does not meet the minimum threshold – if this situation applies to you, please consider looking for other vacancies which may be more suitable.

Location

This apprenticeship is based in Bristol, and you will be expected to work from your primary office throughout the programme. While our hybrid working policy requires office attendance at least two days per week (40% for full-time colleagues), apprentices are expected to be in the office most days during the initial settling-in period.

If your commute exceeds 1.5 hours, we strongly recommend relocating closer to the office to ensure consistent attendance in line with contractual and hybrid working expectations.
