When do Microsoft internships open?

Fall for the following summer, with the Explore window in the same stretch. Roles get posted org by org rather than all at once, so a team you want may appear weeks after the first postings go up. Worth checking repeatedly rather than once.

What internship programs does Microsoft run?

Explore is the one aimed at first and second year students and rotates you across engineering disciplines. Beyond that there are standard software engineering internships, business and MBA internships, and roles tied to specific orgs like Azure, Office, or Xbox depending on that year's headcount.

Do Microsoft interns get return offers?

Yes, and reliably so by industry standards. Microsoft converts strong interns consistently. The decision comes down to manager feedback and whether the org has headcount.

Where are Microsoft interns based?

Redmond is the main campus and takes most interns. There are also roles in Atlanta, San Francisco, and Vancouver, and some positions offer hybrid arrangements.

What types of roles are offered?

Software engineering, product management, and data science make up most of it, with additional internships in UX, finance, hardware, and security. The PM internship is one of the few structured product roles open to undergraduates at this scale.

Is Explore worth taking over a regular internship?

If you are a first or second year, yes. Explore is designed for people who do not yet know whether they want to write code, design, or manage product, and rotating is genuinely useful at that stage. If you already know, a standard engineering internship gives you more depth.

Internships at Microsoft

Microsoft’s internship program is one of the largest and most established in the tech industry, offering structured and supported roles across engineering, design, product, marketing, data science, and research. Interns join teams that work on everything from Azure and Office to gaming (Xbox), accessibility tools, and AI.

Internships are paid and mostly offered in the summer, though some roles are available during the school year. Microsoft provides relocation assistance, housing stipends, and intern-exclusive events like tech talks and hackathons. Internships are typically based in Redmond, WA, or other major hubs like Atlanta, New York, and remote locations.

Interns at Microsoft are part of cross-functional teams and are expected to take ownership of their work, contribute to live projects, and share progress regularly. Mentorship is a key part of the program, and interns often leave with full-time return offers. If you’re looking for a well-supported internship with meaningful work and career development, Microsoft is a strong option.
