Your Role 

As a Summer Intern, you will support the Healthcare Quality & Affordability (HQA) and Medical Care Solutions (MCS) teams in strengthening and modernizing prior authorization processes. You will contribute to high-impact projects that advance analytical decision-making, document and streamline workflows, and help the organization track, document, and meet national industry commitments for prior authorization improvement.

Your Knowledge and Experience 

  • Currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree in business, healthcare administration, public health, data analytics, or related field

  • Requires at least 2 years project management experience working with cross-functional teams (paid roles, internships, volunteer experience, etc.) 

  • Knowledge of healthcare ecosystem; health plan and payer economics 

  • Consulting and/or managerial experience

  • Demonstrated interest in healthcare operations, process improvement, or data analysis

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to document processes and present findings

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams); experience with data analysis tools (Tableau) a plus

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Pay Grade

$25.00 per hour for Undergraduate

$30.00 per hour for Graduate

As an intern at Blue Shield of California, you will:

  • Participate in impactful projects during a 10-week internship program
  • Undertake a 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the healthcare industry, and more
  • Be invited to participate in BSC employee events and networking opportunities such as Employee Resource Groups, employee volunteer activities, and more

Your Work 

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives stemming from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) commitment work, including data collection, reporting, and workflow optimization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify gaps, propose solutions, and support implementation of new processes
  • Assist in evaluating and documenting analytical decisions related to Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code changes, including process mapping and governance support
  • Coordinate and support real-time prior authorization workstreams, including process documentation, training, and readiness activities
  • Support the organization and material preparation, and participate in workshops, governance meetings, and project reviews to gain exposure to enterprise-level healthcare operations

Below is some information on the project this intern will be working on:

  • Mapping and improving end-to-end prior authorization workflows
  • Supporting the rollout and documentation of real-time prior auth policies and processes, assisting with data analysis, information gathering, and reporting for industry prior authorization commitments
  • Evaluating the impact of CPT code changes and their impact on prior authorization criteria
  • Coordinating process documentation, training, and readiness activities across HQA/MCS teams
  • Supporting intake, assessment, and integration of new process improvement initiatives
