The Network Engineer Intern will work within the Technology Department supporting the Technology – Infrastructure Operations Network Team, which protects Southwest from external threats and through automations and other operational efforts. The Network Engineer Intern is an analytical problem-solver and excellent communicator who is excited to contribute to the future of Southwest's Technology.

This role is offered as a remote workplace position, which may require travel for trainings, meetings, conferences, etc. Outside of those required visits, the majority of your working time may be spent in an approved remote location, away from our Corporate Campus. Please note, while this is a remote position, there is limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are: Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New Hampshire New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming, and Puerto Rico.
If you currently reside in an ineligible location, you may relocate to an eligible location and be considered for an internship.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Network Engineer Intern may include, but are not limited to:
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, and network/system issues, including replacing defective components as needed.
Assistwith technical guidance and support for system development and troubleshooting.
Workwith network users to identify and solve existing system problems.
Maintain logs related to network functions, as well as repair and maintenance records.
Supportthe administration of computer and data networks, including hardware, systems software, application software, and configurations.
Performroutine network startup and shutdown procedures, and maintain control records.
Gather data on customer needs to help identify, predict, and evaluate system and network requirements.
Assist with implementation and technical support for voice services and equipment (e.g., PBX, voicemail, telecom systems).
Monitornetwork performance toidentify and recommend future adjustments or improvements.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Work Style, and Abilities:
Skilled in troubleshooting, analyzing, and resolving network traffic and issues.
Knowledge of hardware components, systems, software, and networking technologies.
Ability to prioritize effectively and take on multiple concurrent assignments, whether administrative or project-related, while maintaining a successful level of completion inallresponsible self-work and/or the work of others.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based, Customer service-orientedenvironment with a high regard for hospitality.
Time Commitment and Pay:
Required: Full-time 40 hours a week.
Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8 hours per day.
Program Dates: May 19 – August 7, 2026.
$25-$29 per hour, corresponding with progress toward degree (students with more completed semesters may qualify for higher rates within the range).
Stipends may be offered based on eligibility and program criteria.

Education:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
Progress towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in Networking, Cybersecurity, IT Infrastructure,or a related degree is required.
Progress towards a 4-year undergraduate degree is preferred.
To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by your university) at the time of application and during the internship.
1-2 semesters remaining at the time the internship ends is preferred.
Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application.
Experience:
Preferred: Knowledge of basic concepts of firewalls, ACLs, NAT, VPN, and intrusion prevention.
Preferred: Experience with Palo Alto, Cisco Firepower, and Fortinet firewalls.
Preferred: Experience with AWS and Azure networking, security groups, and firewall services.
Preferred: Experience withLinux/Windows environments.
Preferred: Experience with TCP/IP, routing (BGP/OSPF), VLANs, and packet flow troubleshooting.
Preferred: Experience with Wireshark, Splunk (or other SIEMs), and basic log analysis.
Preferred: Experience with Python or Ansible for network automation.
Preferred: Knowledge ofbest practices for incident response, compliance, and secure configurations.
Preferred: Participation in cybersecurity clubs, hackathons, networking labs, etc.
Preferred: Experience with hands-on projects and/or home labs, or certifications (e.g., CCNA, Security+, AWS Cloud Practitioner).
Preferred: Open-source contributions or technology-related volunteer work.
Other Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.

Interns will be provided any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.
