The Data Analyst Intern, as a member of the Solutions Team in Insurance Operations, applies their skills in analytics, statistical analysis and data visualization to develop data-driven solutions supporting insurance operations initiatives an ongoing process improvement. The intern provides valuable support to professional staff within organizational functions that align with their field of study and contribute to ongoing projects gaining hands-on experience in a structured, professional environment.
This internship is part of the Insure Your Future Program, designed for early college students. Applicants must be current Freshmen or Sophomores and will also participate in the Insure your Future Program, through the Iowa Economic Development Forum, gaining access to additional development opportunities alongside the American Equity Summer Internship Program.
GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
- Shadow Customer Excellence and Insurance Operations team members to learn essential duties and functions of the role.
- Works within a Center of Excellence (COE) model for supporting business enablement by leveraging company data to drive decisions.
- Participate in data analysis to create solutions and improve outcomes across Insurance Operations for both team members and clients/agents/annuitants internal and external stakeholders
- Provides advanced analytics across variety of techniques, including data aggregation, statistical modeling, predictive modeling and machine learning.
- Collaborates with business partners and develop novel ways to meet objectives utilizing data, cutting edge techniques, and tools.
- Effectively communicates the analytics approach and how it will meet business partner objectives.
- Ensures adherence to data management and data governance policies and standards.
- Performs the above duties under supervision of direct manager or other members of the team.
- Completes project and support tasks with guidance from mentor and department leader.
- Collaborates with fellow interns across departments on a strategic, cross-functional initiative that drives meaningful business impact.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a business- related field such as business analytics or management information systems (MIS); quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively present information to stakeholders.
- Some experience using BI tools like Tableau, Power BI, and Ataccama.
- Some experience writing SQL queries, feature engineering, data analysis, data tools, building prototypes, using and creating algorithms and creating simulations .
- Some experience creating and using ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner by defining problems, troubleshooting problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
- Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external partners.
- Takes initiative, follows-through and applies innovation in improving work processes.
- Understanding of statistics including regression, classification, anomaly detection, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc. on large data sets.
- Some experience merging and transforming disparate internal & external data sets together.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
