 Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Generation Development Organization, specifically, within the Renewable Projects Development department in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your abilities to support the development of utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects across the Company’s operating regions. The program provides practical work experience to develop your skills in real-time problem solving, application of engineering principals, and professional communication. Each intern will have the opportunity to participate in the development of new renewable projects from initial conception and early stage design through permitting and regulatory approval where the projects are then transitioned to the construction execution teams. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands-on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the Generation Development, Major Projects Group, and Energy Supply organizations.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to: 

  • Assist in technical evaluation, due diligence, and development of conceptual and proposed renewable generation projects.

  • Participate in frequent multi-discipline project and portfolio development meetings.

  • Assists in activities such as project budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, work order management in support of the renewable generation projects.

  • Support technical review of renewable generation equipment procurement events.

This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering or in a similar program.

  • Current student, current Sophomore or higher

  • Graduating Seniors as of Spring 2026 (not continuing to Graduate School) are not eligible to participate.

  • Able to commute to the corporate office in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN at least three days per week.

  • Able to work full-time during the summer, 40 hours or more per week) and potentially part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher

  • Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework

  • Experience or Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
