Business Unit/Role Specific Information
Operational Resilience is the ability of an organization to withstand, adapt to, and recover from unexpected disruptions such as cyberattacks, natural disasters or technical failures. It extends beyond business continuity by addressing both internal and external risks that could impact on the delivery of products or services. Operational Resilience involves anticipating potential disruptions, strategizing preventive measures, and ensuring the organization can continue serving its customers without interruption during such events.
Operational Resilience program is part of the Business Disruption Risk team within Enterprise Shared Services (ESS) at American Express. This team works with colleagues across the Company to implement and oversee resilience, continuity, and response capabilities to safeguard employees, customers, and products and services. The team coordinates planning and preparedness for potential service disruptions and other crises. The team also coordinates global or regional crisis responses, monitors developing issues while assessing organizational preparedness, and drives after-action crisis analyses and reporting for senior leaders.
How will you make an impact on this role?
As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience supporting our firm’s resilience program. In this role, you will:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Business Continuity Management (BCM), Information Security, Technology, Operational Risk, and Third-Party Risk Management.
- Assist in identifying operational vulnerabilities and potential risks.
- Support the planning and execution of scenario testing exercises.
- Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the firm’s resilience framework.
Additionally this intern will have the opportunity to tackle a high-impact project aligned to our most pressing strategic and operational priorities such as but not limited to:
- Support the development and documentation of Operational Resilience procedures, playbooks, and control standards.
- Assist in the review and validation of Critical Business Services and their dependencies (locations, technology, people, and third parties).
- Participate in scenario testing initiatives, including preparing materials, documenting test outcomes, and supporting post-mortem reviews.
- Analyze and visualize resilience risk data for senior reporting, including committee and board-level insights.
- Benchmark industry trends and regulatory changes to assess their potential impact on the resilience strategy.
- Work closely with international resilience teams to compare frameworks and share best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s degree program
- Bachelor’s degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Interest in enterprise risk, business continuity, cybersecurity, or regulatory compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in any of the following: Risk Management, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Robust problem-solving skills; ability to see the big picture with attention given to critical details.
- Interest in enterprise risk, business continuity, cybersecurity, or regulatory compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and basic data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau or Power BI).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.

Salary Range: $24.05 to $63.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
