Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with USP 795 and 800 standards and other regulatory requirements, which allow safe and accurate preparation and/or compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous nonsterile products (both oral and topical), including reconstitution when applicable.
- Accepts prescriptions, establishes billing/patient charge, documents patient’s allergies correctly, interprets and enters outpatient prescription into the computer
- Assists pharmacists in processing new medication orders and answering phones. Provides accurate, safe, effective handoff to patients and caregivers by providing counseling and education with all dispensed medication in the outpatient pharmacy.
- Completes intern projects and assignments throughout the year: Opportunities include but are not limited to topic discussions, journal clubs, clinical rotations and case presentations, research projects and presentations, professional development activities, intern-specific competitions, simulation center participation.
- Must exhibit excellent customer service skills

- Utilizes math and problem solving skills (i.e. algebra) to calculate amount of drug needed for preparation of prescriptions
- Dispenses medication and counsels caregivers on the medication. Manages dispensing information through the computer system including the patient’s profiles. Reviews patient’s profiles before dispensing medication for possible medication complications and takes appropriate action to correct problems. Complies with OBRA-90 regulations
- Provides drug information to health care professionals, patients and parents; instructs patient/parent on correct use of self-administered medications
- Maintains drug records required by Federal, State, and Local authorities
- Extemporaneously compounds medications which are not commercially available (i.e. suspensions, ointments, etc.) for both inpatient and outpatient use
- Replenishes pharmacy stock area and notifies pharmacist of any problems or concerns
- Answers the telephone and assists caller or forwards to appropriate individual
- Inspects medication storage areas in outpatient pharmacy for expired or unusable medication pursuant to JACHO standard under the direction of an outpatient staff pharmacist.
- Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the outpatient pharmacy
Education Requirement:
Actively enrolled in an accredited College of Pharmacy
Licensure Requirement:
Eligible for a State Board of Pharmacy Intern License
