The mechanical analysis department is a key contributor to the success of a wide variety of space missions ranging from the scientific exploration of other planets in the form of the ESA ExoMars mission, to the intensely competitive provision of global telecommunications via the Airbus Defence and Space Eurostar Neo and OneSat families of spacecraft.

As part of this degree apprenticeship, you will be studying towards achieving a BEng in Electromechanical Engineering provided by the University of Warwick.

What you will be doing: 

The scope of operations on the Stevenage site covers spacecraft hardware design, manufacture and test. Apprentices will contribute to a wide variety of technical skills in spacecraft engineering, both within your home mechanical analysis function and in related engineering departments. These include analysis of spacecraft structures using finite element models, detailed stress analysis using hand calculations and supporting equipment and satellite mechanical testing to ensure that our products can survive the launch and in-orbit environments. 

Mechanical analysis apprentices will have opportunities to experience placements in departments such as:

  • Thermal engineering

  • Propulsion engineering 

  • Manufacturing

  • Robotics

  • Design engineering

  • Finance

  • Project management

You will also develop non-technical skills related to your responsibilities to communicate and deliver your activities in line with the technical and operational objectives.
 

Outward Bound:

During the 1st year of the apprenticeship, you will attend a week of Team Building Activities and Exercises at one of the Outward-Bound UK Sites. Split up into teams consisting of Apprentices of all levels from various Airbus Defence and Space sites, you will work as a team to complete daily activities such as Rock Climbing, Hiking, Abseiling, Canoeing and more.

Requirements:

In order to be eligible to this apprenticeship, you must have a minimum of:

  • AAA grades at A-level, to include Mathematics and Physical Science;

OR

  • BTEC Diploma grade D*D*, with an A grade A-level Mathematics;

OR

  • BTEC Extended Diploma grade DDD, including two Mathematics units or subject to passing a Maths assessment

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding: Commitment to continue personal development, refreshing and expanding engineering knowledge through a variety of methods

  • Design and development of processes, systems, services and products: Contributing to the continuing development of engineering within their domain

  • Responsibility and management skills: Taking personal responsibility for their actions, managing projects

  • Communication and inter-personal skills: Be able to demonstrate a range of communication styles and methods. Understanding the importance of networks within and across functions.

  • Professional commitment: Demonstrating a personal and professional commitment to society, their profession and the environment, adopting a set of values and behaviors that will maintain and enhance the reputation of the profession.
