What you'll be doing
The Enterprise Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence team is hiring a Data Scientist Co-op. This team is the Centre of AI excellence within CIBC and is leading the way in applying the best practices in artificial intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing, leveraging the latest technology and platforms. Our work covers every aspect of the research life cycle, from partnering with Academia to building production systems. We work with product, technology, and business partners to apply the state of the art in AI to our business. As a Data Scientist Co-op, you’ll help build new or enhance existing document-extraction and large-language-model solutions that benefits business units using open-source libraries such as transformers, torch, pandas, scikit-learn and Docling. You’ll design and test prompts for GPT models, transform unstructured data into structured insights, and assess model quality.

This is an 8 month co-op opportunity.
How you'll succeed
Document Extraction & NLP: Apply open-source packages and pre-trained models to extract, parse, and transform data from documents.
Prompt Engineering: Develop and refine prompts for GPT models, ensuring structured and meaningful outputs.
Model Evaluation: Analyze and assess outputs from various models, using your understanding of machine learning and NLP best practices.
Collaboration: Work closely with team members in a hybrid setting, sharing knowledge and supporting project goals.
Technical Contribution: Write clean, efficient code in Python; be able to analyze and modify existing code base and re-use existing functionalities where possible.
Ignite innovation, drive actions- Participate in an analytics community whose goal is to foster and share analytic approaches across the enterprise. Liaise with internal resources or academic institution to obtain and discuss best practices. Passionate innovator and collaborator who is up for the challenge of building a bank of the future and drive results through application of AI and Machine Learning use cases.
Who you are
You are pursuing a computer science degree: Pursuing a degree in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field.
You have good understanding of technology: You are proficient in Python programming and familiar with transformers, torch, pandas, scikit-learn, and docling. You have knowledge/experience using Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) such as Jupyter Notebooks, PyCharm, or VSCode and familiarity with package management tools like Conda and Pip. You have strong understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms, knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques and awareness of AI agents and their applications.
You are self-motivated. You are able to work well in a hybrid work environment and you have a strong time management skills to plan out your work.
You have excellent communication skills. You have a strong ability to convey ideas and information through engaging formats with good presentation and writing skills. A proficiency in writing business decks and process documentation is an asset.
You have a strong sense of intellectual curiosity. You are intellectually curious and often think about ways to improve how we work. You may not know every tool or framework, but your innate sense of curiosity drives you to learn and grow your technical and business acumen.
