Job Description

As an intern with the Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) team, you will be involved with research and development activities to deliver ARMOR, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy's coated cladding system. Several coatings are being explored, each with unique design and performance challenges. The ARMOR development team works within the shops and laboratory at our Wilmington NC site, works closely with GE Vernova Advanced Research Center (GEV-ARC), and with external vendors. In addition to the development of coated cladding, the Accident Tolerant Fuel team is also developing a novel cladding product which resists hydrogen pickup for higher burnup performance, and increased margins related to cladding ductility. The ATF team is part of the Materials Engineering group, and has expertise in fuel materials properties, behavior and performance. The Intern will work with experienced materials engineers to deliver necessary components, develop processes, and generate test and characterization data which contribute to a coated cladding system. The Intern will be trained in laboratory safety and may perform metallographic sample preparation and optical microscopy.

Project Outcomes:

•            The Intern will contribute to the development of an advanced coated cladding nuclear fuel cladding product.

•            The Intern will learn about BWR water chemistry, fuel cladding, coating technologies, and strategies for fuel cladding performance enhancements.

•            The Intern will obtain experience working within production shops, an analytical laboratory, and teaming with materials engineers and scientists at GEH/GNF and GE Vernova Advanced Research Center (GEV-ARC).

•            The Intern will be trained in laboratory safety and perform metallographic sample preparation and optical microscopy.

Primary Skills Developed:

•            Application of materials science towards design and selection of candidate materials

•            Testing relevant to materials applications in a boiling water reactor (BWR) environment

•            Knowledge of BWR water chemistry and environmental degradation of materials within the BWR environment

•            Project planning and execution

•            Communication with internal team members and other organizations within GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy

•            Written communication and technical reporting

Internship Term Dates: May/June - August 2026

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Materials Science or Nuclear Engineering
  • Minimum GPA 4.0 / 5.0 scale
  • Experience in materials processing (thin films or bulk materials), testing, and/or characterization

Desired Qualifications:

Familiarity with environmental degradation in nuclear reactors

Familiarity with metallographic preparation and imaging

Familiarity with SEM/EDS, compositional analysis and other materials characterization techniques

Prior work with the MITR, the ATF program or Department of Energy programs
