  • Designs, validates and brings new products to market. Specifies precise new product functional requirements; designs, tests and integrates components to produce final designs; and evaluates the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability and safety. Designs, develops, executes and evaluates fitness-for-use testing, product specifications and process validation plans; creates and reviews material part specifications and bills of materials. Collaborates with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability. Utilizes CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs and produce detailed engineering drawings.


    This position requires knowledge that is acquired through experience, specialized education or training. The role has clearly defined procedures and tasks as well as defined guidelines to aid in decision making. Technical knowledge required is limited to the tasks performed in own discipline area and is considered basic. The tasks are generally routine and manual. The job is expected to follow detailed and defined rules / instructions and to make simple judgement in straightforward situations. Typically requires selecting between solutions already established. This job typically requires no experience.
  • BASIC FUNCTION

    -This role will support the systems team with cross-disciplinary solutions for an Endoscopy product.
    - It will be a mix of design/testing (40%), and technical writing/meetings/quality management system
    development (60%).
    - This 8-month co-op term is preferably aimed at applicants in their 3rd or 4th year of a Biomedical, Electrical,
    Integrated, Mechatronics (or similar) program. It would be advantageous to have completed a previous co-op
    term.
    - This position is not a remote only position, it may be hybrid depending upon the nature of projects.
    - This position provides an opportunity to learn about the design requirements of medical devices and how to
    define product and platform them, with the successful applicant participating in activities including writing
    requirements, designing test fixtures or tools, and prototyping.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    -Primarily: assisting with the design of various aspects of an Endoscopy product offering.
    - Evaluating design options and bench testing to determine acceptability criteria and optimal solutions given
    constrained timelines.
    - Providing progress updates in design reviews as required.
    - Supporting prototyping and new product development.
    - Designing and building test fixtures and jigs in support of verification and product testing, as needed.
    - Producing DHF documentation such as requirements, protocols and test reports.
    - Additional responsibilities may include assisting in assembly of prototype devices, development of optomechanical
    jigs & fixtures, research on injection molding methods & materials, and supporting the project
    manager as required.
    GENERAL:
    While working with a team of engineers and under the supervision of a senior engineer, the co-op will be
    expected to engage on some of the following types of activities:
    - Quality Management System DHF/DMR development on new and existing products, including documentation,
    meetings, and liaising across cross-functional teams.
    - Participate in front-end conceptual design and engineering activities on new products.
    - Sourcing components and identifying appropriate vendors.
    - Product and component testing both in the form of early laboratory prototypes and final, formal product
    verification testing.
    - Design of test setups and testing conditions to investigate options for improving device performance.
    - May work with vendor engineers to design systems, and during early design stages to perform evaluations
    and experiments.
    - Participate in design reviews, risk management and associated risk control assessment.
    - Understand and follow proper procedures and best practices; work with senior engineers to improve them.
    - Actively contribute to and respect team decisions; strive for and abide by consensus; operate within Company
    core values.
    - Contribute to project planning and commit to deliverable goals. Proactively report progress to project
    management and R&D management when required.
    - Take direction as needed from senior engineers and R&D managers; complete most tasks with minimal
    guidance; use resources responsibly and effectively.
    - Proactively seek out senior technical leaders and managers as necessary.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    - Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 kilograms of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force
    frequently to lift, carry, etc. generally involves sitting most of the time.
    - Must be able to communicate with groups of people.
    - Must be able to review printed materials.
    - Ability to use common office equipment.
    MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
    - Self-managed, self-motivated, with excellent hands-on problem-solving skills.
    - Must be able to generate and explain design objectives.
    - Must be able to complete detailed documentation accurately. Astute attention to detail.
    - Must demonstrate creative thinking and paper-based problem-solving ability.
    - Must be able to review and troubleshoot designs and provide constructive feedback. Listens to others within
    the team environment to understand their thinking.
    SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
    - Self-managed and self-motivated work ethic is critical given the nature of position (some remote work, largely
    without constant oversight)
    - Hands-on problem-solving skills
    - Fluent with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
    - Experience in any CAD modeling software.
    - Experience in programming and basic of SDLC
    - Debugging skills on basic EE, SW and Assembly
    - Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    - Proven ability to write procedures and present complex problems and solutions.
    EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED
    - Enrolled in an engineering program – preferably 3rd or 4th year of an Engineering program (EE, Biomedical,
    Integrated, Biomechanics, or similar)
    - Available for an 8-month co-op term at minimum
