The American Equity Summer Internship Program offers an immersive real-world experience, closely replicating the career journey of an American Equity professional. Each intern will contribute to meaningful, hands-on projects that drive measurable business outcomes, gaining valuable experience along the way.

Interns will also have the opportunity to present their project work to company leaders, network with executives, and participate in educational programs designed to support their personal and professional growth. Additionally, interns will engage in community service projects and social events, building connections with fellow interns and the broader American Equity team.

The internship will be a 10 week program located at our downtown Des Moines office.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Finance Intern works with the various finance teams to perform investment, FP&A, assist in the daily, monthly and quarterly accounting duties such as the preparation of reconciliations, journal entries, financial analysis, and internal and external reporting and financial projections for the Company’s investments. This intern will gain a broad knowledge of finance principles while providing valuable support to professional staff within organizational functions that align with their field of study and contribute to ongoing projects gaining hands-on experience in a structured, professional environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Investment Accounting
    • Perform investment analysis, including yield trending and income attribution on a $95+ billion investment portfolio. 
    •  Reporting investment data to other departments and stakeholders. ·
    • Completion of investment disclosures and schedules.
  • FP&A
    • Capital monitoring and analysis – understand and monitor development of regulatory and rating agency capital models.
    • Plan and perform quarterly financial projections of capital at the insurance and holding company level; analyze quarterly results, including actual to expected and quarter-over-quarter trends.
  • Finance/Other
    • Support monthly and quarterly financial statement close process.
    • Budget and expense input and analysis.
    • Reinsurance analysis, including completion of monthly and quarterly settlement process and monitoring of “off-shore” reinsurance related to our Bermuda affiliate
  • Travel opportunities with affiliate entities.
    • Completes project and support tasks with guidance from mentor and department leader.
    • Collaborates with fellow interns across departments on a strategic, cross-functional initiative that drives meaningful business impact.
    • Perform ad hoc reporting and other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or other related field of study.
  •  Actively pursuing a masters in business administration
