Internship Details

  • Duration: 12 weeks, full-time
  • Dates of Internship: May 18, 2026 - August 7, 2026
  • Location: San Diego, CA
  • Hours: Monday-Friday 40 hrs/week
  • Eligibility: Preferred candidates are rising juniors and seniors (Dec 2026 through June 2028 graduation) who are currently enrolled in a relevant degree program; however, all current students pursuing related studies are encouraged to apply.

Labcorp is a leading healthcare company dedicated to advancing genomic research and drug development. The Center of Excellence (CoE) in Data Science and Bioinformatics at Labcorp Information Technology department manage a wide range of diagnostic tests using advance technologies such as next generation sequencing and microarray. The internship program in this CoE provide a unique opportunity for the students to interact with the CoE personnel and get hands-on experience and knowledge of solving real life problems in data sciences and bioinformatics. It also contributes directly to Labcorp research and development efforts to address challenging data science issues and speed up critical production development efforts.  

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Bioinformatics Intern (Graduate Student) to join our team. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for a graduate student to apply their advanced knowledge and skills in bioinformatics, computational biology, and data analysis. As a Bioinformatics Intern, you will collaborate closely with our research scientists and data analysts, contributing to high-impact projects that involve complex data interpretation and algorithm development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advanced Data Analysis: Perform sophisticated analysis of genomic, transcriptomic, or proteomic datasets using state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools and pipelines.
  • Algorithm Development and Optimization: Develop, refine, and implement algorithms for data processing, including sequence alignment, variant calling, gene expression analysis, and network biology.
  • Software Development: Contribute to the development and enhancement of bioinformatics software tools and pipelines, ensuring they meet the research needs of the team.
  • Collaborative Research: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, providing bioinformatics expertise to support ongoing research projects and studies.
  • Data Interpretation and Reporting: Analyze and interpret complex biological data, preparing detailed reports and presentations to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Literature Review and Research: Stay abreast of the latest bioinformatics methodologies and advancements, integrating new approaches into ongoing projects.
  • Mentorship and Guidance: Provide guidance to junior team members or interns, sharing your expertise and contributing to a collaborative learning environment.

Education/Qualifications/Skills:

  • Education: Currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics, such as Python, R, Perl, or Java. Experience with high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNA-Seq, DNA-Seq) and familiarity with bioinformatics tools like BLAST, GATK, Bowtie, and others.
  • Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability to analyze large, complex datasets and derive meaningful insights.
  • Experience: Previous research experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Experience with machine learning or AI applications in biology is a plus.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey complex technical information to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills

Pay Range: $35 - $40/hr

All job offers will be based on a candidate’s skills and prior relevant experience, applicable degrees/certifications, as well as internal equity and market data. 

Benefits: Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for comprehensive benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, STD/LTD, 401(k), Paid Time Off (PTO) or Flexible Time Off (FTO), Tuition Reimbursement and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.  Casual, PRN & Part Time employees regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours are eligible to participate in the 401(k) Plan only. For more detailed information, please click here
