Victoria Shipyards specializes in complex projects up to complete vessel conversions. It is an integral part of the Canadian Navy frigate and submarine maintenance programs, with its highly specialized and experienced team providing critical maintenance on Canada’s Halifax-class frigates for over 20 years and in-service support for its Victoria-Class submarines for over a decade.
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Sustainability, the Intern, Environmental will support the Environmental Department in maintaining environmental compliance, supporting operations, and contributing to the implementation of environmental programs at Victoria Shipyards (VSL). They will work closely with the Environmental Specialist and Manager, Environmental Sustainability to assist with inspections, data collection, reporting, environmental communication initiatives, and administrative activities, along with varied day-to-day tasks.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Victoria Shipyards, 825 Admirals Road, Esquimalt, BC.
What you’ll do
Provide support during internal environmental inspections to ensure policies and practices are properly implemented and assist with addressing findings
Support the implementation of on-site environmental programs and participate in environmental-related committees and initiatives
Assist with spill prevention and response efforts, including incident investigations, internal/external reporting, lessons learned meetings, and training and drills
Contribute to the preparation of reports for the Manager, Environmental Sustainability, including analyzing and interpreting environmental monitoring data
Compile data for annual reports (e.g., NPRI, ESG, etc.)
Participate in stormwater quality monitoring, sampling, and data analysis
Support acquisition of environmental controls for trade departments (i.e., labels, containment, spill kits, etc.)
Manage wildlife concerns
Participate in Energy and Waste Management Committee Meetings
Support internal and external environmental audits to ensure compliance by organizing documents, tracking actions, and preparing summary reports
Periodically prepare environmental and program performance summaries
Support maintenance of the environmental management system, in alignment with the ISO 14001 standard
Compliance and EMS
Assist with activities to maintain environmental compliance and support the Environmental Management System (EMS)
Education and Communications
Support the development of educational materials for environmental programs (e.g., intranet articles, toolbox talks, TV slides, posters, etc.)
Help to organize and facilitate VSY and Seaspan-wide environmental events, as directed by the Manager, Environmental Sustainability
What you’ll bring
Be working towards a diploma or degree in Environmental Science/Management or related field and have knowledge of scientific principles with respect to environmental protection and sustainability
Knowledge of local, provincial, and federal regulations pertaining to environmental management and sustainability
Excellent interpersonal skills (verbal, written, listening, etc.) and ability to communicate effectively to a diverse audience
Ability to analyze data and produce information reports
Demonstrated ability to work within set timelines
Organized with strong digital literacy
Willingness to learn about health and safety
Comfortable moving around a heavy industrial environment
Assets
Familiarity with the shipyard industry and the Green Marine Program
Knowledge of the ISO14001 environmental management systems standard
Experience conducting environmental risk and/or hazard assessments
Experience with spill response and reporting

Seaspan’s Internships are 4 or 8 months in duration. We require a full-time commitment Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.

End Date of Internship: Friday, August 28th, 2026 (8-Months)
