MDT Internship Program provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of problem solving, innovation and teamwork. Interns engage in Montana’s transportation projects that have a direct impact on Montana’s traveling public! Interns will collaborate with area experts and gain invaluable hands-on experience. Our internships focus on training and integrating the interns into our current workforce of over 2,000 people across Montana who are all providing a vital role to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
Recruiting for summer Safety Internship position! All applicants must be enrolled in a College, University, or Tech School. If applicant is not currently enrolled in a College, University or Tech School the application will not be considered for a position unless the applicant is within six months of their graduation date. Applicants with less than 60 credit hours may be considered.
- The Safety Intern will not receive benefits such as paid holidays or medical coverage.
- Work schedule will be 40 hours a week for 90 days during the summer of 2027.
- This position will be Helena based but will require up to 50% travel to all MDT districts in the state. Within each work day your daily schedule will vary depending on the duties of the day.
The safety intern will primarily be responsible to transition MDT from the current Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to the new Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This update to the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) will provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets. Once implemented, the revised standard will improve the quality and consistency of hazard information in the workplace, making it safer for workers by providing easily understandable information on appropriate handling and safe use of hazardous chemicals. This position may also assist MDT Safety Consultants with specialized training, jobsite safety inspections, and accident investigations as needed.
Staff training on new GHS requirements and safety data sheets, updating manuals with new safety data sheets, doing chemical inventories, jobsite safety inspections, and accident investigations.

Students must be currently enrolled in College, University or Tech School; or a recent grad (no more than 6 months past graduation) can apply. Prefer a student entering their final year of college or a recent graduate. Desired degree in Occupational Safety and Health or similar degree.
Must have valid driver's license.
