STARTING PAY: $20.00/hour

JOB SUMMARY
This position will learn how to do all aspects of, and assist in, the repair and maintenance of all city vehicles and equipment.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

The Variable Fleet Apprentice position is anticipated to work up to 30 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position will learn how to and will assist with:

Performing preventive maintenance.

Performing vehicle repairs.

Performing state and federal inspections.

Learn to diagnose electrical / electronic and mechanical issues.

Learn basic automotive network diagnosis

Responding to roadside repairs and service calls with other Certified full time Technicians.

Performing data entry of work orders.

Learn basic fabricating or repairing with various types of welding equipment.

Performing computer data scans on vehicles.

Placing new and used equipment in service.

Performing other duties as assigned.

Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting.  If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.

Current Hepatitis vaccination required

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from the Fleet Maintenance Shop Leads, Fleet Manager and specific direction from current Fleet Mechanics.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Education

Minimum of 16 years of age, proof of age required.  Currently enrolled in high school or post high school automotive technology program is desired or working in a related automotive repair field.

Experience

Basic knowledge of mechanical tools and equipment.  Must possess a genuine desire to work in the automotive industry.

Licensure/Certification/Registration

If 18 years or older, must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Ability to obtain a minimum of one ASE certification within 6 months of hire.

Mechanical aptitude.

Basic math and computer skills.

Written communication skills.

Problem solving skills.

Ability to promote and follow City of Lakewood and Fleet Management policies.

Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate manager.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Lifting and Carrying

Must be able to lift and or move 75 pounds repeatedly, as part of a team-lift on occasion (e.g., grease drums, vehicle parts, grader blades).

Pushing and Pulling

Must be able to push and pull heavy parts and equipment from awkward positions.

Body Positions

Must be able to stand, bend, lean, walk, on hard concrete floor for 4 hours at a time.

Must be able to handle and assemble small delicate parts.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Hearing/Vision

Must be able to see and hear adequately to use diagnostic equipment as well as hear warning signals, equipment.

Mathematics

Must be able to do arithmetic at high school level.

Language Ability

Must be able to read and write English at high school graduate level.

Must be able to or learn to read engineering drawings and wiring diagrams and parts and service manuals.

Reasoning:

Must be able to reason logically and prioritize work in response to customer needs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Majority of work performed in noisy shop environment.

Frequent personal contact with co-workers as well as customers.

Loud noise, exhaust fumes, chemicals and potentially hazardous situations and equipment is encountered.

Moving heavy objects in awkward positions is not uncommon.

Must perform duties outside of main shop and in adverse weather conditions.
