Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Spring 2026 TDS Proteins Development Material Sciences Co-Op, located in Malvern, PA.

Research & Development Co-Op Overview:

J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

We offer a fast-paced cross-functional, technologically advanced, corporate environment, passionate about developing individual engineering and scientific skills. You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

Life as an R&D Co-Op:

The R&D Co-Op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-Op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

The typical Co-Op term is from Jan 2026– Jun 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with scientists in the lab to understand how to run instruments and gather/process data; work to develop operating procedures for new instruments, work with vendors on how to run instruments, complete external research (via journal articles/online) to understand more about techniques and capabilities.
  • Work with colleagues to organize data and information to enable basic assessments and information on specific materials/chemicals.
  • Research additional relevant information on chemically-defined media supplements, materials, e.g. solubility, thermal transition temp, crystalline state, moisture, chemical stability information and/or how to analyze and test them with capabilities (instruments) in our laboratory.
  • Compile and organize currently available data and information related to chemically-defined media and supplements (physical, chemical, microbiological) and convert into more useable form as needed (for further analysis in Excel and to incorporate into a central database).
  • Prepare technical documentation.
  • Participation in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
  • Support with miscellaneous laboratory work/training

Qualifications

Education:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and related majors are preferred.
  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of a co-op assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or equivalent experience, Master’s, or PhD degree or equivalent experience. For students pursuing their Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, Juniors or Seniors are preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.
  • Completion of Undergraduate Freshmen year at an accredited University is required.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future (e.g., FI, H1-B status)
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills is required
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are preferred
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and initiatives while performing results
  • Must be a self-starter works independently while supplying to the team goals
  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired

Preferred:

  • Students with basic general laboratory hands-on skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, and data analysis
  • Experience in pipetting, HPLC, and LCMS
