We are always looking for amazing talent who can Hardware Reliability & Sustaining Intern who will work closely with all product teams to develop and implement appropriate tests, ensuring we create the highest quality product. What you'll do:

The Hardware Reliability & Sustaining Intern is responsible for supporting the reliability and functionality of both existing and new hardware products. This intern level position involves assisting in failure analysis, supporting the development and execution of validation and verification test plans, aiding in the lifecycle management of hardware components and ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with quality standards. The role focuses on sustaining activities, design verification and testing, and support & maintenance of Geotab hardware. The role supports senior team members in these activities by providing assistance with technical tasks, documentation, and testing processes.

The opportunity:

  • 12-16 month work-term beginning May 2026.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Participate in sustaining projects, including baseline reviews of existing products, developing test plans and test cases, executing tests, and creating design verification reports.
  • Support supply chain management (SCM) with lifecycle management of parts, and evaluate alternative requests from contract manufacturers.
  • Assist in failure analysis escalations from Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) and Engineering Support (EUSP).
  • Support in-life product management activities such as build transitions to new contract manufacturers, DEV Kit management, and bill of material changes.
  • Support the reliability of new product innovations by contributing to research and development initiatives.
  • Assist in new product introductions (NPI) by conducting final quality audits before handover, and reviewing and transferring all design files and documents.
  • Assist in external lab testing by developing test plans for lab partners, creating test fixtures/setups, monitoring tests, and reviewing final reports.
  • Support product lifecycle management (PLM) including handling engineering change requests (ECRs) and engineering change orders (ECOs) prompted by SCM requests and failure analysis, creating new parts, managing databases, and reviewing footprints/symbols.
  • Support manufacturing and field support activities, including various requests across Geotab for product support, manufacturing and maintenance, site visits, and hardware provisioning/testing.
  • Assist in the development of product life cycle strategies, and support the deployment for NPI/sustaining products.
  • Help ensure lab safety and maintenance by developing safety protocols, maintaining and managing assets, conducting calibrations, providing safety training, procuring new equipment, and handling electrostatic discharge (ESD) setups.
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing test reports to ensure a high degree of accuracy and completeness.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Basic proficiency in utilizing tools such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMM), DAQ systems, power supply units (PSU), frequency counters, environment chambers.
  • Testing hardware for functionality, performance, reliability. 
  • Familiarity with PCB EDA/CAD design tools (e.g., Altium).
  • Diagnosing hardware related problems using root cause analysis and implementing effective hardware design solutions.
  • Analyzing failure reports, conducting root causes analysis.
  • Analyzing circuit schematics and understanding signal flow, voltage levels and component interactions. 
  • Maintaining accurate documentation of hardware designs, changes and issues.
  • Digital and analog circuitry design experience, including circuitry design, layout and verification.
  • Understanding of hardware peripherals, such as CAN, UART, SPI, I2C, SDIO, DDR, USB.
  • Maintaining clear and organized hardware design documentation, including specifications, schematics, design change records and hardware verification report.
  • Using signal integrity simulation tools like LTspice and Ansys to analyze and simulate circuit behavior.
  • Familiarity with SAE J1455, SAE J1962, ISO 7637, ISO 16750, ISO 60068, IEC 60529 automotive industry standards.
  • Ability to develop basic test cases and test plans with guidance, referencing product requirements.
  • Initial experience with scripting languages such as Python or Perl.
  • Basic working knowledge of GBQ or MySQL.
  • Basic understanding of development cycle models, such as the V-Model.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices.
  • Introductory understanding of HALT testing.
  • Ability to support establishing traceability between verification activities and requirements.
  • Initial exposure to defining timelines and schedules for verification activities with supervision.
