Business Unit/Role Specific Info
The Data Engineer role at American Express is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to help shape experiences for one of the world’s top brands! We seek a thought-leader and a problem-solver who can blend business, technical, and industry standard methodologies.
Our 10-week Summer Internship Program runs from June to August. This program will provide you with real, on-the-job work experience; giving you the skills and experience to help you accelerate in your studies and future career!
How will you make an impact in this role?
- Design and optimization of data architectures and pipelines
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with business needs and enterprise standards
- Foster innovation and best practices in data infrastructure
- Executing Big Data management strategies through partitioning and indexing solutions
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027
- Currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other technical field
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in SQL and Python (or any other programming language like Java)
- Proven interest in technologies and customer-driven design
- Willing to take risks, experiment, and share fresh perspectives
- Strong analytical/quantitative and problem-solving skills with the ability to distill complex concepts or problems.
- Independent thinker with intellectual curiosity and desire to continually learn about the changing payments landscape and emerging technologies.
- Ability to collaborate with and build strong relationships with leaders, colleagues in different time zones, and cross-functional partners to deliver value.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present ideas clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated resilience, proactive problem solving, ‘can do’ attitude, and optimism in changing circumstances.
- Comfort with challenging the status quo and driving continuous process improvement
- Proficiency in analytical and presentation tools, including MS Excel and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of Big Data / NoSQL design and development with variety of data stores (document, column family, graph, etc.)
- Knowledge of database management system products and ecosystem - e.g., storage formats, access algorithms, data management processes, administration, data maintenance, replication, high availability, encryption, etc
- Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational & non-relational databases
Salary Range: $50.48 to $70.33 hourly + sign-on bonus
