Role: Intern

Our Nuclear & Power division is a leading consultancy providing multi-disciplinary engineering support services to all project stages, from concept through to completion, to owners, operators, regulators and suppliers to a diversified set of clients. Within the Nuclear sector, we’re involved across the whole life cycle of the civil nuclear industry, building the next generation of civil nuclear power stations and the first large scale prototype fusion reactor, meeting the challenge of keeping the current nuclear fleet operational and tackling complex decommissioning projects.

To meet the increasing demand of our expertise in the nuclear industry we have now multiple opportunities for Interns with qualifications in Mechanical, Instrumentation, Chemical engineering to join the nuclear team at our AtkinsRéalis Bangalore, Gurugram and Mumbai office.  (Within the industries such as Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Nuclear Power, Conventional Power and other related industries).

Responsibilities:

  • The work is varied and may include some or all of the responsibilities mentioned below:
  • Mechanical, Civil, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation and Chemical based design and 
  • engineering experience.
  • Mechanical and Civil engineering intern responsibilities.
  • Structural design and assessment/ Fatigue and Fracture assessment/Structural integrity analysis/Stress analysis /Engineering substantiation studies to international standards.
  • Building /Plant systems design and analysis through Finite Element Modelling.
  • Finite Element Modelling and Analysis using ABAQUS or ANSYS.
  • Design by rule-based calculations including calculation of structural thickness etc.
  • Production of deliverables such as design definition and substantiation documents, detailed equipment specifications, pipe material specifications, system performance test specifications.
  • Development of finite element models from the drawings and engineering judgement on element selection for the built FE models.

Chemical Engineering intern responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing and optimizing processes for nuclear plant and balance of plant systems, fuel handling, reactor operations, and waste treatment.
  • Support the development of reactor cooling systems, and radiation shielding components.
  • Prepare technical reports and operational instructions for nuclear systems and fuel handling.
  • Support equipment layout planning and process simulations.
  • Help implement safety procedures and ensure compliance with nuclear regulations (e.g., NRC, IAEA
  • standards).
  • Work with cross-functional teams including mechanical engineers, control system and instrumentation engineers.
  • To deliver the projects to Time, Cost and Quality requirements.

Control system and Instrumentation Engineering Intern Responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing and implementing control systems for nuclear reactors and auxiliary systems.
  • Support development of instrumentation for monitoring temperature, pressure, radiation, and flow rates.
  • Help install and calibrate sensors, transmitters, and control devices.
  • Participate in testing and commissioning of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), and DCS (Distributed Control Systems).
  • Monitor system performance and assist in troubleshooting faults or inefficiencies.
  • Analyze data from control systems to identify trends or anomalies.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for operational and safety audits.
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and nuclear engineers to ensure integrated system performance.

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

You will need to demonstrate experience in some or all of the following areas:

  • Suitable degree in Mechanical, Control system and instrumentation, Chemical engineering. 0 to 1 year experience in Nuclear, Power, Oil & Gas or other highly regulated industrial environment Mechanical and Civi engineering intern job requirements.
  • Experience in production of Finite element models preferably in ABAQUS, ANSYS or Both.
  • Experience in Linear and Non-Linear Static analysis.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory programs – International codes.
  • Good Technical Aptitude and has good understanding of Machine design, Strength of materials, Civil structures like Buildings, Bridges etc.
  • To deliver the projects to Time, Cost and Quality requirements.
  • Experience in developing the mechanical engineering solutions to the required standards, including detailed technical reports to meet client expectations.
  • Proven computer aptitude, and expertise in MS office.
  • Understanding of other relevant engineering disciplines like piping etc.
  • Familiar with international design codes and standards (such as: ASME BPVC Section III,  ASME B31.1).

Chemical Engineering intern job Requirements:

  • Basic understanding of unit operations, process control, and plant safety.
  • Familiarity with chemical handling, lab safety, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Proficiency in CAD tools and data analysis software.
  • Exposure to instrumentation, SCADA systems, or HAZOP is a plus.

All interns are:

  • Ability to work independently or as part of team, flexible attitude to the type of work and the level of responsibility accepted.
  • Ability to understand and define client’s requirements, plan and schedule deliverables, timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills with a proven ability to write accurate, detailed and concise technical reports (e.g. design substantiations, basis of analysis, safety case support references).
  • Flexible to travel to AtkinsRealis and client’s office locations around the world, if required.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Ability to understand and define client’s requirements, plan & schedule deliverables, timelines.
  • Strong delivery culture, ability to multi-task, resource management, delegate tasks, develop and deliver cost/time-effective solutions.

You will also be expected to demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Professional approach.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Team working, being comfortable working in international teams.

Tools / Software’s:

  • Exposure to FEM software like ABAQUS, ANSYS, Hypermesh, PATRAN /NASTRAN for Mechanical engineering interns.
  • Exposure to process simulation (Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, CHEMCAD), CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks), data analysis (Excel, MATLAB, Python) for Chemical engineering interns.
  • Exposure to CAD tools like AutoCAD for design, PLC programming software such as RSLogix and TIA Portal, and simulation environments like MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Additionally, they work with HMI and SCADA software for Control system and instrumentation engineering / Electronics and Communication interns and also exposure to software like MATLAB, Multisim, PSpice, Xilinx ISE, Altera Quartus, and LabVIEW is a plus.
