The Cyber Advanced Analysis Team (CAAT) in Navy Federal’s Information Security Division’s Automation and Special Projects group identifies, tracks and mitigates cyber threats to Navy Federal Credit Union Members. Systemic and persistent threats to Navy Federal Members include but are not limited to fraud schemes and identity theft. CAAT collaborates with additional teams across Navy Federal to innovate and automate protections against these threats.
The Summer Associate will conduct a three-month research experiment with the intent of presenting the results of the research at the end of the summer.
Potential projects could include:
- Investigate phishing sites targeting Navy Federal Members to identify and analyze the phish kits or other infrastructure commonalities across the sites.
- Build a machine learning model to categorize or classify deep and dark web threats to Navy Federal Members.
- Investigate emerging threats from stablecoins and cryptocurrencies as a result of 2025 policy changes
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2026 and ending in August 2026. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2026 or later.
- Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Computer Forensics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or other related degree
- Familiarity with the concepts of social engineering, phishing, credential harvesting or other threat intelligence relevant to financial insititutions
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Effective research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Effective skill maintaining accuracy with attention to detail and meeting deadlines
- Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment to make sound decisions
- Ability to adapt to new technologies
- Effective organizational, planning, and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment

- Retrieve, analyze, and validate data and test accuracy of reported results
- Analyze open source, DDW and internal-to-NFCU member data to understand, predict and identify opportunities to improve member security
- Develop and present proposal on findings from analysis and research to management up to and including senior executives
