This position is expected to start around May 2025 and continue through the Summer term (approximately August 2025) or into Fall 2025 if available and there is an opportunity to do so. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full-time positions, not internships. 

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.   

About the Team

Design Technology is part of the Engineering Automation Software (EAS) organization. We are responsible for developing software to accelerate product development as it pertains to building our EVs, energy products, and gigafactories. This organization takes the same principles of adding exciting technologies into our vehicles and applying that same creative mindset to vehicle design, by thinking about how technology and innovation can help improve these processes.

As an intern, you will help shape how Design Technology builds innovative software that accelerates the pace of product and equipment design at Tesla.  Your work will fundamentally transform the way engineers create and communicate the air work which will have a direct impact on Tesla’s ability to scale the company worldwide.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop state of the art code
  • Influence the software development culture to be innovative
  • Provide mentorship to other software developers in the team
  • Design, extend, and review software architecture
  • Be hands on and involved with every stage of the product development cycle
  • Establish and extend standards and best practice for software engineering

Job Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or relevant field of study with a graduation date between 2025 -2026
  • Must be able to relocate and work on site in Palo Alto, CA
  • Strong development skills in languages such as go, java, c/c++, python (existing codebase is mostly written in go with some java components)
  • Experience with cloud native deployment practices; specifically, containers and container orchestration platforms (Docker/Kubernetes/Helm) and the Kubernetes environment (networking, nginx ingress, apache, haproxy, etc.) and familiarity with cloud native development best practices (12 factor applications)
  • Experience with publish/subscribe event buses such as Apache Kafka or NATS, as well as distributed data stores (relational and otherwise) and an understanding of underlying technologies (e.g., log-structure merge trees, raft etc.)
