Position Overview:

In this role, you will work with colleagues in the JNJ Innovative Medicine R&D Data Science & Digital Health (DSDH) organization and partner with key businesses across JNJ Innovative Medicine (formerly Janssen). The R&D DSDH team within JJIM is driven to meaningfully change the trajectory of disease with transformational medicines to advance the care of patients in the communities we serve. The team uses a diverse set of data and tools, along with platform solutions to answer impactful analytical questions and inform key projects from discovery all the way through late development. This role sits within the DSDH Global Functions team and works cross-functionally to assess and implement state-of-the-art translational analytics and research that will inform on inclusion/exclusion criteria for protocol development.

Responsibilities:

  • Programmatically aggregating and evaluating outcomes and adverse events across multiple large internal/external sources
  • Design, develop, and validate models to automate disease and outcome severity assessment
  • Automate ETL processes in protocol optimization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support data science initiatives in early-stage protocol optimization
  • Create and maintain documentation of data processes and procedures.
  • Communicate data-related findings and insights to stakeholders.
     

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational biology, or related degree (graduation date must extend past the internship end date).
  • If an undergraduate, student must be at least a sophomore at time of application
  • Possess a strong understanding of Biomedical Informatics, Biomedical terminology, Statistics, Digital Health, or related field as proven by current or prior coursework
  • Familiarity with EHR and medical claims data
  • Have experience with large database queries, construction, and automated ETL processes using SQL/Python/R
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Strong interest in the exploration of innovative research using Digital Health, Real World Data, and gaining data and biomedical domain knowledge.
  • Intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and a collaborative work approach
     

Preferred:

  • Coursework or background in Epidemiology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and other Life Sciences.
  • Prior independent, graduate, or classroom research experience on a data-focused project.
  • Able to travel to on-site location in La Jolla, California
     

For consideration in the Janssen Intern program, you must meet the following requirements: 

  • Permanent US work authorization without the need for sponsorship now, or in the future (F1 or H1B requires sponsorship in future)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, which is reflective of all college coursework
  • Be currently enrolled and pursuing a Master’s, PhD, or MD degree
  • Masters/PhD/MD students must have earned undergraduate degree after May 2025
  • Ability to work full time (40 hours a week) for the full term. Planned dates of January 5th, 2026, through March 27th, 2026

Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.  Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

23$ per hour to 51.50$ per hour

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

The anticipated base pay for this position is between 23$ per hour and 51.50$ per hour but will be based on candidate's program year, discipline, degree and/or experience. This position is overtime eligible. Intern/Co-ops may be eligible to participate in Company employee benefit programs such as medical insurance, sick time, holiday pay, and the Company’s consolidated retirement plan in accordance with the terms of the applicable plans. Housing stipend will be offered for those that qualify. This position is ineligible for severance.
