Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to be based in Arlington, VA.

This position is expected to begin in Summer 2026.

Internships are designed to introduce and build essential, hands-on skills that differ from those attained in the academic arena and help to enhance the transition from student to professional. Interns are assigned duties that will provide a broad, well-rounded learning experience within their field of study.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs specific portions of a broader assignment under the mentoring of an experienced engineer.
  • Prepares designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings and working drawings.
  • Evaluate, select, apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and judgement based on experience to design HVAC systems in buildings using building information modeling.
  • Coordinate with other discipline Engineers as applicable for the continuity of the design process.
  • Participate in design progress and coordination meetings.
  • Assist with the design content by applying both design and technical knowledge to ensure high-quality outputs under project timelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent and must have completed at least three of years of study. Candidates who have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Ability to manage time, and deadlines, keep track of steps in progress, and prioritize tasks.
  • Experience utilizing industry standard software packages such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam (pdf editor), or similar.
  • Experience sizing ductwork systems and modeling in 2D and 3D platforms.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Comfortable working in a high energy environment with frequent deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
