Job Description

AECOM is seeking one student currently enrolled in the Engineering Co-op Program of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta for an 8-month co-op placement. The position will start in January and finish in August of 2026.

The position will be with the project management team of the Valley Line LRT Owner's Engineer (OE) led by AECOM and will include the following duties:

  • Project Management - assisting leadership with various management activities of multi-disciplinary teams consisting of consultants, contractors, clients and stakeholders; work with the project team to control scope, schedule, quality and budget of OE team; assessing whether project activities are in accordance with the best practices of project management methodology, processes and procedures; assisting coordination of external consultants and contractors to meet project objectives in a collaborative manner; documenting project activities 
  • Design Review - reviewing project documentation prepared by other parties for contract compliance; attending and documenting technical meetings; coordination of and support for design review teams 
  • Schedule Review- evaluation of overall project status; analyzing field reports to assess contractor performance; tracking progress of construction activities 
  • Construction Review - performing field inspections of construction activities; coordination of and support for construction monitoring teams; assisting with resolution of technical challenges related to construction; evaluate whether construction activities are compliant with the contract
  • Quality Management - coordinate review of quality documentation provided by the constructor and reviewed by the OE, review comments and evaluate for compliance with project requirements, participate in resolution of technical and contractual issues

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical engineering and must have completed at least 1 year of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the master’s degree are eligible to apply for this position. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualification:

  • The preferred candidate will be completing their 4th and 5th work placement terms in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Accuracy with details is essential
  • Experience working around mobile heavy equipment and farm implements is considered an asset
  • Familiar with materials testing procedures and construction coordination services
