­Project Description:

Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Substation Communication Engineering Department, specifically in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. Substation Communication Engineering is responsible for the critical task of providing secure and reliable communication circuits to substations for SCADA, teleprotection, and remote access to ensure the reliable operation of the electric power system. We also manage substation cyber-security, and operations network architecture/planning. The paid internship program provides practical work experience to develop your existing skillset and collaborate with key internal stakeholders. Each intern will be relied upon to play a role in achieving department objectives and goals. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the organization.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Support engineering efforts on Capital Projects
  • Help resolve remote device connectivity issues and other device troubleshooting
  • Onboard and troubleshoot substation firewalls
  • Update and maintain the engineering lab network and device configurations
  • Support department automation efforts

This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • A current Sophomore or above (as of May 2026).
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally
  • Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
  • Able to commute to the corporate office in Denver, C - hybrid schedule
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Course work in power generation or project management.
  • Interest in the power industry or industrial control systems
