SUMMARY

FUNCTION:

The City of Charlotte, Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) is currently accepting applications for its full-time Mason Apprentice positions.

The CDOT Mason Apprentice will work alongside and assist masonry professionals in constructing and maintaining concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, and brick structures within the right of way. The Mason Apprentice will receive on-the-job training that will help develop the skills needed to be a highly skilled masonry professional. The individual will work under the supervision of the Labor Crew Chief.

SUMMARY:

This is a one-year apprentice position with the goal of preparing the apprentice to be a Mason and will include on-the-job training and classroom work. Upon completing the one-year apprenticeship program, the apprentice will perform various manual and semi-skilled tasks, with the ability to obtain a nationally recognized Department of Labor journeymen credential and potentially secure a full-time position with the City of Charlotte – Charlotte Department of Transportation as a Mason.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

•Assist with constructing and maintaining concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, and brick structures.

•Learn how to mix mortar, set up forms, and use related construction equipment. 

•Support masonry professionals with setting the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.

•Learn how to check the forms that hold the concrete to ensure they are properly constructed.

•Learn how to spread, level, and smooth concrete using a rake, shovel, hands, power trowel, power screed, and float.

•Observing how the wind, heat, or cold affects the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.

•Support masonry professionals in producing rough concrete surfaces using a broom.

•Assist with mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.

•Read written plans and service request directions when necessary to complete a construction job. 

•Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

•Building and Construction- Have some knowledge of materials, methods, and tools for constructing or repairing houses, buildings, or other structures, such as highways and roads.

•Mathematics- Have some knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.

•Customer and Personal Services – Have some knowledge of the principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

•Public Safety and Security- Knowledge of OSHA, City, and Federal rules and regulations, work hazards, and applicable safety precautions of the assigned work.

•Monitoring- Monitoring/Assessing the performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

•Active Listening- The ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

•Time Management- Managing one's own time.

•Communication Skills – Conveying information effectively through speaking and writing, and understanding information others give through speaking and writing.

•Teamwork skills – Works well with others to accomplish a common goal.

•Physical Abilities include but are not limited to sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling/squatting, walking, driving, crawling, climbing, lifting and carrying (up to 90lbs), shoveling, pushing, and pulling.: 

TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MACHINES:

Rake, shovel, concrete, brick-laying tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Extreme Temperatures possible outdoors; Some physical activity and time spent in heavy machinery.

SCHEDULE:

 Monday – Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

•High School Diploma/ GED preferred. 

•The ability to obtain and maintain a City Driving Permit is preferred.

•No work experience is required, but you must be open and willing to learn.

Salary:

The registered apprenticeship begins at a starting wage of $23.00 per hour, with progressive increases provided as proficiency and demonstrated competencies are attained.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
