Root was founded on the belief that car insurance is broken, and we set out to change it. We’re harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize this archaic, complicated industry. Using machine learning and mobile telematic platforms, we’ve built one of the most innovative insurtech companies in the world.

The Opportunity

At Root, interns don’t sit on the sidelines—you build, test, and ship like a real PM from day one. Insurance is complicated and confusing. That’s what makes this work exciting: your job is to simplify it, creating experiences that feel clear and valuable for customers while driving real business results. Our 11-week Product Management Internship is designed to give aspiring PMs hands-on experience in product thinking, problem-solving, and customer-centered innovation.

You’ll join a full delivery team—engineers, designers, analysts, and data scientists—and be expected to roll up your sleeves, get curious about people and their motivations, and wrestle with messy problems until you make them simple.

Here’s what you’ll experience:

  • Hands-on product work. Design, test, and ship customer-facing features that make insurance less painful.
  • Curiosity in action. Learn why people drive, how they make tradeoffs, and what motivates their choices.
  • A show > tell culture. Use AI tools (Midjourney, V0, Mode, Eppo, Figma, etc.) to build prototypes, mockups, and data visualizations—not just presentations.
  • Science > religion. Treat every assumption as a hypothesis. Test everything. Doubt is how we learn.
  • Executive visibility. Present your work directly to company leaders.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

Salary Range: $23 - $35/hr

Internship Duration: 11 weeks (June – August 2026)

Please Note: We are unable to do OPT and CPT work authorizations

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Partner with PMs to define product requirements, write user stories, and prioritize features.
  • Embrace our show > tell mindset: write it down, make it visible, and demonstrate your ideas through prototypes and data.
  • Use modern AI tools to create functional prototypes, mockups, and visualizations that bring clarity to complex problems.
  • Live our science > religion culture: test everything, measure impact, and move forward with eyes open.
  • Collaborate daily with engineers, designers, analysts, and data scientists to drive products from discovery to delivery.
  • Own your work end-to-end—don’t assume someone else will lead or move it forward.
  • Seek feedback constantly. At Root, all feedback is good feedback—it makes your work and you stronger.
  • Deliver a final project that doesn’t just explain your insights—it shows them, with a working prototype and recommendations that matter.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Rising seniors (graduating 2027) or Master’s students (graduating 2026/2027) in Business, Economics, CS, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Curious, creative thinkers who care deeply about people—their behaviors, tradeoffs, and motivations.
  • Problem-obsessed, not solution-obsessed. You’re willing to stay uncomfortable until you know the problem is real.
  • Strong verbal and written communicators who thrive in cross-functional collaboration.
  • Familiarity using SQL and/or product tools (figma, lucidchart, V0) are a plus.
  • Interest in product management, technology, fintech, or insurance.

As part of Root's interview process, we kindly ask that all candidates be on camera for virtual interviews. This helps us create a more personal and engaging experience for both you and our interviewers. Being on camera is a standard requirement for our process and part of how we assess fit and communication style, so we do require it to move forward with any applicant's candidacy. If you have any concerns, feel free to let us know once you are contacted. We’re happy to talk it through.
