Instrumentation Design Engineering (IDE) within the Development Operations department is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern. Our group designs some of the most advanced instrumentation ranging from accelerometer brackets, major station probes, blade tip clearance probes and slip ring packages, through optical blade tip timing probes and fan blade out packages. Our hardware is used to collect data during the testing of every engine in the Pratt and Whitney portfolio. 

The Mechanical Design Engineering Intern will work either commercial or military programs, which will be determined based upon candidate qualifications and program needs. Depending on the phase of the program the tasks will vary but may include developing conceptual instrumentation designs through final drawing release, fielding development assembly or manufacturing concerns, or revising drawings for continuous improvement.

What You Will Do

  • Responsibilities may include working on tasks related to commercial engines, military engines or both depending on business need. May be required to obtain a security clearance.
  • Design instrumentation and hardware used to enable engine or rig testing in support of research and development of jet engines.
  • Design solutions that meet objectives of the test engines and facilitate delivery of development hardware to test engines on schedule and on budget.
  • Create product definition data (models and drawings).
  • Prepare and present Design Reviews to both internal and external customers.
  • Lead an Integrated Product Team (IPT) for each design task and work with stakeholders across multiple disciplines.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Enrolled in a degree program in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) field
  • Minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.0

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience collaborating with a team to develop innovative ideas
  • Experience communicating clear and effective messages to a broad audience
  • Experience with gas turbine engine design and/or instrumentation design.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 standards, including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with Model-Based Design / Product Definition.
  • Experience with UG NX modeling and drafting tools.
  • Experience with Teamcenter product lifecycle management (PLM) tools.
  • Experience with ANSYS workbench finite element analysis (FEA) tools

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays.
