Our Deputy Chief Financial Officer’s (CFO) Office is looking for seven (7) Co-op Students to provide support within the various Finance teams. The Co-op Students will work with internal and external stakeholders to provide administrative support, create presentations, maintain systems, and recommend improvements to processes.

A description of the areas are as follows:
Accounting: The Accounting team leads the month end close processes which facilitates the preparation of the quarterly balance sheet and annual financial statements for Senior Management, Board of Directors and our stakeholders such as the Ministry of Transportation and the Province of Ontario. The team activities include coordinating the assurance work with external auditors, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and the General Ledger accounting and analysis, statutory financial reporting ensuring compliance with corporate policies and generally accepted accounting policies (GAAP) and tax compliance.
Embedded Finance (Corporate Finance, Payments Finance, Operations GO/UP, and Asset Management & Maintenance): The Embedded Finance Team works along side the departments as a trusted business partner and is crucial in advancing the financial strategies, goals and decisions of the departments. Through active involvement, it provides well-informed financial guidance and support to enable the departments to achieve its financial goals. The teams support operating and capital financial portfolios and financial asset management functions. This includes capital budgeting/forecasting, financial reporting and insights to drive effective business decisions, asset classes on memo development, and capital funding strategy development.
Financial Planning & Analysis:
The FP&A team plays a pivotal role in ensuring that Metrolinx is meeting its financial objectives to deliver its growing programs, while adhering to government policy and legislative requirements. The team provides analytical support to senior management and the Embedded Finance teams to enable effective data-driven decisions. This includes development of Metrolinx’s operating budget, monthly Business Performance Review report, quarterly forecasts, Metrolinx’s public-facing Business Plan as well as the Management Discussion and Analysis section of the Annual Report. The team also manages the Oracle Hyperion application, and builds Power BI dashboards to meet analytics requests and track the organization’s financial performance.
- Support business case financial modeling for various business intake projects and initiatives with a view to monitor and manage costs and inform performance management activities
- Assist with ad-hoc deliverables and projects that may involve developing worksheet templates for analyses, updating process documentation/manuals, preparing PowerPoint slides, and working with various cross functional teams on initiatives.
- Help produce daily/weekly/monthly operational documentation and reports, as assigned
- Help and support to staff in a variety of areas, including gathering, inputting, organizing, and interpreting data for reports/presentations/meetings/projects
- Prepare agendas, coordinate, attend, and take minutes for daily technical/operational meetings
- Support gathering audit evidence in the external auditor’s portal
- Maintain and update electronic and hardcopy filing systems and provides record management services
- Recommend improvements to existing processes and procedures to achieve greater efficiency
- Assist with the maintenance, development, monitoring and reporting of tools and systems for data analysis
- Develop spreadsheets, forms, and databases to input, track, store and retrieve data
- Present key findings to team members and management as required
- Must be enrolled in a full-time accredited co-op program in order to be considered for this position.
- Must be at least 15 years of age before starting employment
- Enrolled full-time in Finance, Economics, Accounting or Business at a post-secondary institution or a similar program at a post-secondary institution. Working towards CPA designation would be an asset.
- Passion for working in Finance is preferred
- Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills are required
- Competence in software such as Power BI and Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- A willingness to learn while being exposed to all aspects of Finance
