About Rippling

Rippling gives businesses one place to run HR, IT, and Finance. It brings together all of the workforce systems that are normally scattered across a company, like payroll, expenses, benefits, and computers. For the first time ever, you can manage and automate every part of the employee lifecycle in a single system.

Take onboarding, for example. With Rippling, you can hire a new employee anywhere in the world and set up their payroll, corporate card, computer, benefits, and even third-party apps like Slack and Microsoft 365—all within 90 seconds.

Based in San Francisco, CA, Rippling has raised $1.4B+ from the world’s top investors—including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, Sequoia, Greenoaks, and Bedrock—and was named one of America's best startup employers by Forbes.

We prioritize candidate safety. Please be aware that all official communication will only be sent from @Rippling.com addresses.

About the Role

At Rippling, Engineering is at the heart of our business and culture.  We believe in our early talent’s potential, experience and aspirations. Our mission is to open the realm of possibilities and opportunities for students by fostering growth through mentorship and training, ownership through impactful and innovative projects, and, of course, fun through our diverse culture and work hard, play harder attitude. As an Engineering Intern, you will join the Machine Learning Team in Summer 2026 (End of May-August) to develop robust, well-designed products, implement new updates and features, and solve complex problems that affect our business and our clients.  Rippling Interns gain the experience of full-time engineers with responsibilities, ownership, and opportunity.  Interns will be assigned projects that not only have an impact on the business, but that are also scoped to fit within the time constraints of their internship so they can see the full impact of their work.

We provide our interns exciting and innovative projects to work on that allow them to see the fruition of their work. During your 13 weeks at Rippling, we will provide all of the tools needed to be successful.  Your dedicated mentor and manager will provide support for your learning and development throughout your time with us. You will join your fellow interns in a variety of socials, talks with Rippling leaders, and more!

What you will do

  • Translate product needs into crisp mathematical formulations (models); train those models; and, with a small team ship them to production.
  • Learn how to design scalable machine learning pipelines for data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, and evaluation. You will work with data engineers to collect and preprocess data sets for model training.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest research in ML and related fields, and apply this knowledge to improve Rippling products.

What you will need

  • Currently enrolled in a M.Sc. or Ph.D. program in computer science or in a related field with at least 1 semester/quarter after their internship is completed
  • Solid programming skills with an emphasis on backend experience and knowledge. Our production code base is primarily Python, PySpark, and PyTorch.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Passion to learn and develop your skills, both in machine learning and software engineering.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with developing things that use large language models (LLMs) and familiarity with pre-training and fine-tuning techniques.

Even if you don’t meet all of the requirements listed here, we still encourage you to apply. Skills can be used in lots of different ways and your life and professional experience may be relevant beyond what our list of requirements has outlined.

About the team

The Applied Machine Learning team @ Rippling aims to apply the power of Large Language Models & traditional ML techniques to the task of helping managers run companies more effectively. We are building a knowledge graph of the people and work outputs of a company – and layering on top of this tools to better understand what’s going on and where decisions need to be made.

  • We are a full stack team – working across Rippling to ship vertically integrated products. We’re building data & machine learning infrastructure, training custom models and building user facing apps.
  • We are a flat & lean team – while many of us have specializations and areas of expertise, we regularly span the entire stack. We’re hiring exceptionally smart, autonomous engineers who can communicate complex technical ideas with clarity and precision.
  • Org imperative – we work directly with our executive team on product planning & execution. Applied machine learning is a high level imperative for Rippling, and we have the resources we need to move fast and build.
