Job Description:

Ethicon, Inc.—a member of Johnson & Johnson’s family of companies located in Raritan, NJ—is recruiting for a Spring 2026 R&D Intern in the area of Wound Closure and Healing. In this role, the Co-op will join a collaborative team of scientists and engineers which support new product development aimed at addressing unmet needs in wound closure with particular emphasis on antibacterial technologies and cardiovascular surgery.

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-day responsibilities may include the following:

  • Hands-on laboratory work in engineering laboratories

  • Utilizing bespoke machining processes for novel medical device builds and evaluation

  • Attending and participating in Voice-of-Customer (VOC) labs with surgeons

  • Working with teams to design key project studies

  • Testing and characterization of prototype devices and competitive products

  • Good documentation practices, including writing test protocols, generating final reports, and documenting meeting minutes

  • Collaborating with engineers and outside suppliers to support project related activities

  • Generating 3D Models and 3D printing them to support/develop test methods and fixtures

Qualifications

Required:

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Must have transportation to and from work daily

  • Ability to relocate to work on site in a laboratory environment

  • Completion of at least a first year of undergraduate academic program

  • Must be able to balance multiple projects and maintain organization

  • Must have the ability to work individually as well as on a team

  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Excel

  • Co-Op Terms: January to July/August 2025 OR May/June to December 2025. Start/End dates are flexible to accommodate academic calendars.

  • Intern Terms: May/June to August 2025. Start/End dates are flexible to accommodate academic calendars.

  • Ability to work full-time (40 hrs/week) during the Co-op / Internship term

Education

  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of the Internship assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

  • A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required, but a GPA of 3.0 or higher is strongly preferred

  • The following disciplines are preferred: Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering

Experience and Skills:

  • Ability to work closely with technical and non-technical personnel

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and a dedication to delivering the highest quality of work with attention to detail

  • High level of organization and ability to balance multiple projects/initiatives while achieving results

  • Must be a self-starter. Comfortable working both independently and with a team.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

$23.00/hr to $51.50/hr 

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

The expected pay range for this position is between $23.00 per hour and $51.50 per hour but will be based on candidate's program year, discipline, degree and/or experience. Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington, up to 56 hours per calendar year. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension).
