Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

The Intern, Innovation will be working with experts and leaders across the organization, the Innovation intern undertakes unique assignments that supports investigation outcomes and enhances the visibility of developments in the technology areas of Reality Capture and Autonomous Manufacturing.

  • Reality Capture: Investigation into 3D laser scanning and visual object recognition solutions that contribute towards capturing and tracking current-state ship arrangements and equipment.
  • Autonomous Manufacturing: Adoption, testing and evaluation of the applications and uses of autonomous and semi-autonomous systems (e.g. drones, cameras, IOT) for work quality detection and inspection and worker safety in heavy-industrial environments.

Seaspan’s Innovation team is actively developing in several technology areas including digital twins, green technologies, and autonomy in support of use cases for future vessels, engineering services, and in-service support. Our innovation program includes current and planned projects seeking scalable solutions that integrate emerging technologies using real-time sensors, 3D spatial information, and visualization technologies to improve Seaspan’s shipbuilding and refit business.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver

What you’ll do

The successful applicant for this position will support technical and non-technical work with internal stakeholders and provide day-to-day support to managers and engineers while performing specific activities, including:

  • Working with core Innovation team members and users to define requirements, select technologies and develop test cases.
  • Full ownership and initiative in the development and demonstration of selected technologies and applications (e.g. as a case study or pilot study).
  • Perform assigned work including, as appropriate: literature and online research, coding, testing, and evaluations of your project’s technologies and applications.
  • Coordinate and schedule activities to procure and manage Innovation technology assets.
  • Capture and communicate the solution, progress and outcomes using demonstrations, presentations, and reports.
  • Lead and facilitate meetings, updates, and other demonstration activities with team members and senior staff.
  • Engaging with the wider team, stakeholders and other departments to manage progress and align the project’s vision.

What you’ll bring

  • Enrolled in a 3rd or 4th year business degree program, post-graduate students are also encouraged to apply. Candidates who can support an 8-month work term or more are preferred.
  • A strong curiosity about marine and vessel applications for imaging and scanning sensors, autonomous systems, and Industry 4.0 manufacturing (previous experience in shipbuilding is not required)
  • Passion and surface level knowledge on some of the following technologies:
    • 3D scanning systems and object detection and recognition algorithms.
    • Manufacturing quality and performance monitoring methodologies and technologies.
    • Sensing and IOT in manufacturing production systems and work inspection.
  • Experience in conducting technical investigations with strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills including technical report writing.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and manage their time optimally.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and using collaboration and coordination to drive successful project outcomes.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and engineering skills through exposure to industry experience, class projects or co-op terms.
  • Excellent proficiencies using Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint and other applications.

End Date of Internship: Friday, May 1st, 2026 (4-Months).
