The engineering intern will provide reliability engineering support to Nichols Station and work closely with the engineers at the plant to develop engineering skills to allow the reliable operation and maintenance of power plant equipment. The support will include: overhaul planning, capital projects, troubleshooting of power plant equipment and working with contractors both onsite and offsite. The intern assists with SAP work order creation and other paperwork preparation such as one-pagers used to request funding for various capital projects. Intern will also support pulling and updating drawings by learning the use of Project-wise software.

Project Description:
Xcel Energy is seeking a candidate to support our Energy Supply Organization, specifically within our Harrington/Nichols Stations Reliability Engineering. The paid internship will provide an opportunity to showcase your abilities in one of our power generation groups that support the safe and reliable operation of power plants within the company. The engineering intern will provide reliability engineering support to Harrington/Nichols Stations and work closely with the engineers at these facilities to develop engineering skills to allow the reliable operation and maintenance of power plant equipment. The support will include overhaul planning, capital projects, troubleshooting of power plant equipment, working with contractors both onsite and offsite.


Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in the safety meetings and tailgates
  • Learn and be proficient in the use of various power plant support software
  • Work with various contractors in the support of planned capital projects
  • Work with plant crews in walking down and troubleshooting various plant equipment
  • Assist with drawing print updates, data collection, and analysis.


This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Sophomore status (as of May 2026) or higher
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in any Engineering major, preferably Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or Environmental Engineering.
  • Able to commute to the Nichols Station Power Plant located in Amarillo, TX.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the spring (up to 20 hours a week). (select one or both depending on the role).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Completed 1 years of undergraduate coursework, including engineering classes
  • Technical writing
