2026 Drug Product Development Intern Overview

This intern will support the formulation development of protein biologics in the Drug Product Development group. This position requires laboratory work. The candidate must conduct all work activities in compliance with AbbVie internal and applicable regulatory requirements.  AbbVie internal requirements include compliance with ethics, environmental health and safety, financial, human resources, and general business policies, requirements, and objectives. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Preparation of parenteral formulations for biologics 

  • Surfactant screening and characterization (surface tension assessment and pyrene-based fluorescence CMC determination) 

  • Exposing protein formulations to stress (expose the formulation to manufacture and storage-related stresses) 

  • Characterization of parenteral liquids and lyophilizates using state-of-the-art methods 

  • Protein stability evaluation 

  • Actively interact with the DPD team members, generate high-quality data based on sound scientific principles, write technical reports, and work on scientific presentations 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences, chemical engineering, analytical sciences, biochemistry, or other related fields 

  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship 

  • Teamwork, accuracy, curiosity, and structured thinking skills 

  • Experience or coursework in biologics formulation and characterization of liquid formulation 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Expected graduation date between June 2026 - December 2027 

  • Prior experience in analytical techniques such as surface tensiometry, size exclusion chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescence spectrophotometry, qELISA, and RP-HPLC is highly desirable
