Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Integrated Systems Planning group, specifically within the Transmission Modeling and Analytics department in Minneapolis, MN, Denver, CO or Amarillo, TX. To meet Xcel’s goal of a carbon-free system by 2050, Modeling and Analytics provides the data and evaluations needed to develop transmission, generation, distribution, and gas systems. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your engineering and automation capabilities in transmission system modeling and power system analysis, including steady state and transient analysis. The program provides practical work experience to develop your existing skillset, expand with new capabilities, and present and collaborate with key internal stakeholders. Each intern will be relied upon to play a role in achieving department objectives and goals. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands-on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Learn to use various power systems modeling and analysis software, such as PSSE and TARA.
Automation of existing processes
Assist with updates, data maintenance, and analysis.
Under guidance, perform power systems studies and reporting.
This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
Current student, Junior status (as of May 2026) or higher
Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Renewable Energy or equivalent
Able to commute to the corporate office in Minneapolis, MN, Denver, CO or Amarillo, TX
Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and part time during the fall and spring (up to 20 hours a week).
Preferred Qualifications:
3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
Electrical engineering – circuits knowledge at a minimum. Completion of a power systems introductory course would be a plus.
Introductory programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++)
Any completion of energy systems courses (renewable energy, etc.) would be a plus.
