The starting salary will be based upon the conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement Wage Schedule between Georgia Power and IBEW Local Union Number 84, which includes an increase every six months until you max out in your job classification and a cost of living increase every July.
JOB SUMMARY
The Apprentice Electrician is a training position to develop the knowledge and skills a Journeyman Electrician will need to maintain power generation facilities.
This position is responsible for performing electrical maintenance which includes, but is not limited to, maintaining and/or repairing power plant equipment; working on both energized and de-energized equipment; planning work and following procedures/prints to install and maintain equipment; performing preventative maintenance on plant equipment; performing assembly and disassembly of components using proper rigging and lifting techniques; troubleshooting equipment; properly using electrical test equipment; communicating with plant supervision, plant operations personnel and/or plant maintenance personnel; and responding to call outs in the event work is required after normal working hours. In addition, these positions will maintain plant maintenance records in the Maximo® computer-based work order system and ensure all work complies with environmental permits and regulations. The incumbents are expected to perform all work safely and with the utmost concern for their personal safety and the safety of other employees.
Normal work schedule is Monday – Friday from 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent Required
- This is an entry level position. Experience with electrical and mechanical systems is desired.
- Two-year technical degree in Electronics, Electricity, Electronic Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Electrical/Mechanical preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

- Ability to read and follow procedures and electrical drawings/prints is required
- Knowledge to troubleshoot electrical circuits/controls using prints is required
- Knowledge to test equipment is required
- Self-starter with the ability to work with little to no direction as well as possess an ability to follow directions when required
- Ability to use and understand various electrical test equipment (e.g., multimeter, amp-probe, meggar, etc.) is required
- Ability to use powered and non-powered hand tools proficiently is required
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions is required.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are required.
- Ability to plan work to maximize production is required
- Basic electronics, instrumentation, program configuration, distributed/process control systems, PLC's, and DCS, and is preferred.
- Fundamental knowledge of motors, controllers, switchgear, relays, transformers, generators, and AC/DC systems is required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications is desired
Other Requirements:
- Qualifying on pre-employment tests is required including POSS, MASS, and EATOKS
- Ability to perform physically demanding activities (i.e.,walking, climbing ladders, lifting heavy equipment) while working safely in all types of weather.
- Support a 24/7 schedule, including holiday and back shift work when necessary

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules and regulations.
- Relevant, work-related experience with basic electrical theory, single-phase, and three phase motors preferred.
- Candidates must have a basic understanding of wiring diagrams and control schematics.
- Knowledge of electrical symbols and formulas will be necessary: Wiring diagrams and control schematics. Basic transformer theory. Single-phase and three-phase motor basics. Basic AC & DC electrical theory.
- The ability to use precision measuring tools is essential.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good hand and eye coordination.
Behavioral Aspects:
- Candidates must be willing to work outside in all climate conditions and must be available for overtime and emergency call-out. All jobs require timely callout response time and 50% availability.
- Candidate must be willing to maintain regular attendance.
- Must be available for scheduled overtime.
- Need to be willing to relocate for job opportunities.
- Must understand the value of customer service and support.
Pay
- This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement (union contract) between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union wages are governed by the union agreement.
TRAINING
- Apprentice Electricians will undergo an extensive training program including classroom, skills, and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 2 years.
- Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Journeyman Electrician positions as they become available.
