Business Unit/Role Specific Information
The American Express business has two core types of customers. The Card Members that use our cards to make purchases, and the businesses that accept them. In Global Merchant & Network Services, we primarily focus on the businesses that accept our cards. We bring together the businesses that manage and evolve the company’s relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express, as well as the team that runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally. This is an exciting time for GMNS. We are expanding global acceptance of our cards, driving greater usage of our network, leveraging our modern capabilities to capture broader revenue streams, and driving innovation both in-house and with partners. To put the scale of our global reach in numbers:
- More than 80 million global locations accept American Express payment products
- We operate in 198 countries and territories
- We have 140+ million cards in force, that perform 12 billion transactions per year and contribute more than $1.5 trillion in network volume
- We have 190+ partners who either issue cards on our network, and/or sign new businesses to accept Amex on our behalf
Business Development owns partner/customer facing projects aligned to the company’s strategic goals, delivering differentiated products and services that driving revenue growth for both merchants and American Express.

- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the merchant business and its needs.
- Conduct research on the external and competitive landscape to identify trends and opportunities.
- Perform data analysis to help improve performance and drive growth for American Express.
- Support projects that may include finding innovative ways to prospect new customers, identifying opportunities to enhance customer experience and conducting research and data analysis to inform business strategies and strengthen competitive positioning.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a full-time Master’s or Graduate degree program.
- Graduate Degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027.
- Problem solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to distill down complex concepts or problems.
- Demonstrated customer-focused mindset with the ability to anticipate and meet stakeholder needs.
- Project management experience: Superior organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, delivering on deadlines and high-quality, timely outputs.
- Effective communicator and influencer: Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to convey ideas clearly and effectively.
- Collaborative team player: Ability to collaborate within cross-functional teams.
- Critical thinking: Demonstrated strategic thinking, independently and use thought leadership to drive meaningful outcomes.
- Entrepreneurial spirit: Proactive self-starter with a demonstrated track record of achieving results and a strong commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 years minimum experience in Business Development, Marketing Analytics, Marketing, Product Development, Product Management, Product Analytics, Strategy and/or related.
- Graduate students enrolled in one of the areas below or related field:
- Business
- Business Administration
- Business Development
Salary Range: $38.45 to $87.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
The above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we’ll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.
