Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Spring 2026 Co-Op in

Biologics R&D Process Development Automation, located in Malvern, PA.

Research & Development Co-Op Overview:

J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

Life as an R&D Co-Op:

The R&D Co-Op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-Op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

The typical Co-Op term is from Jan 2026– Jun 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

The TDS Proteins Development API organization is seeking a candidate interested in protein process development and the equipment used to support it. In this role, the Co-Op will...

  • Learn and develop proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various high-throughput and automation equipment in biologic pharmaceutical process development labs. Take point on creating protocols on benchtop automated liquid handlers and configuring ancillary automation systems. Develop problem solving skills by addressing equipment issues quickly to prevent delays in lab work.
  • Lead the implementation of high-throughput Protein A chromatography workflow as a routine service supporting bioreactor cell culture process development.
  • Execute proof-of-concept experimentation.
  • Participate in multi-departmental technical discussions and strategy sessions.
  • Document scientific experimentation in electronic notebooks and logbooks.
  • Learn basics of the biologic pharmaceutical development process and how high-throughput/automation technology is employed to accelerate development.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
  • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.
  • Provide other project support as needed.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and related majors are preferred.
  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of a co-op assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or equivalent experience, Master’s, or PhD degree or equivalent experience. For students pursuing their Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, Juniors or Seniors are preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.
  • Completion of Undergraduate Freshmen year at an accredited University is required.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future (e.g., FI, H1-B status)
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills is required
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are preferred
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and initiatives while performing results
  • Must be a self-starter works independently while supplying to the team goals
  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired

Preferred:

  • Students with basic laboratory skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, and data analysis preferred.
  • Students with a foundational scientific laboratory background, strong technical writing skills, and interest in laboratory automation.
  • Students that are highly organized, self-motivated, and a team collaborator.
