Internship - 2025 Product Development Engineering Intern

3M is seeking a Product Development Intern for its R&D Lab team, located in Brockville, ON. Intern is intended to start in January 2025.

*Successful security clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Registration program is a mandatory pre-requirement for this position at this location. Please note the following are some (but not all) of the listed requirements for Controlled Goods Clearance:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen normally residing in Canada, or must be a Permanent Resident normally residing in Canada
  • Must have valid and current identification (i.e.: driver’s license, passport, birth certificate)
  • Must be able to provide a residential address and employment history of the past 5 years
  • If applicable, living outside of Canada during the past five years will require an international criminal name check

The successful candidate will support and collaborate with a variety of project teams throughout the term, making an impact by assembling respirator cartridge prototypes, testing these prototypes and analyzing the resultant data. This is a 8, 12 or 16-month internship, ideal for a student in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. This position requires the successful candidate to be onsite, full time.

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a Product Development Engineering Intern, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Working with colleagues to execute experiments to improve the performance of respiratory protecting filters and cartridges
  • Preparing raw materials and sub-components for prototypes
  • Assembling respirator cartridge prototypes
  • Analyzing properties of respirator cartridge prototypes via various standard test methods and propose the next round of experiments
  • Supporting scale-up experiments in a manufacturing environment
  • Documenting experimental findings
  • Presenting progress updates at team meetings
  • Recommending process and prototype design improvements

Your skills and expertise

To set you up for success in this role from Day 1, 3M requires (at minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Enrollment in Engineering undergraduate degree program and formalized post-secondary internship program
  • Ability to successfully pass Controlled Goods screening (MUST be at minimum Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident ordinarily residing in Canada)

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Self-starter with the ability to flex with changing team priorities
  • Experience with data management, maintaining records, etc.
  • Intermediate experience with MS Office
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required as this role will involve collaboration with a diverse group of global colleagues.
  • The successful candidate must be capable of working closely with both laboratory and manufacturing colleagues to ensure successful commercialization of developed products and implementation of required changes.
  • Previous experience in an R&D environment using Scrum/Agile techniques is an asset
  • Experience using Minitab for data analysis
  • Experience and interest in CAD would enable opportunity for additional training and development using Solidworks
