The Mission Systems Environmental Effects Engineering team at Collins Aerospace is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to assist our staff. Our team performs Electromagnetic Compatibility/Interference (EMC/EMI) and Power Input qualification testing of Company products and programs to various military and commercial industry standards; particularly MIL-STD-461 and DO-160. This position will be responsible to support all mechanical aspects of the specific project below:
Conductive plastics and elastomers have been part of the aerospace industry for decades in the form of gaskets, absorbers, and chassis shields. Most manufacturing solutions utilize injection molded techniques. This prevents these materials from being part of the EMI troubleshooting process. Customization is required with long lead times for conductive plastics to be part of a high-intensity, schedule-conscious EMI troubleshooting effort.
Established EMI Troubleshooting techniques have a long history of working well within certain boundaries. This project seeks to open additional options for design teams when troubleshooting failures in a lab environment. Development teams can then prototype their shielding and gasket designs before approaching a vendor for a formal design.
This project is relevant now due to advances in material properties where conductive composite filaments are available from multiple vendors. Additionally, advances in printing and mixing technologies all composite filaments to be easily printed and extruded in-house. Finally, the production quality of modern printers has leapt forward over the past few years allowing for cost reduction and ease of use of printing technology.
What You Will Do:
- Serve project as a focal point for all EMI assessment and test activities including:
- Test planning and experiment preparation
 - Documentation support including
- Preparation and review of test plans, procedures, and reports
 - Generate repeatable test procedures and physical test setups with test equipment and appropriate data recording

 - Validation of all laboratory test setups to ensure compliance with test procedures
 - Analysis and interpretation of results

 - Provide general laboratory support
- When available, learn about general laboratory activities and other support test efforts

What You Will Learn:
- Gain knowledge in 3D printing and modeling of fixtures and test accessories
 - Work with a team of engineers to design, build, and execute experiments
 - Understand equipment certification as it pertains to electromagnetic compatibility, including design, test, and analysis.
 - Learn the fundamentals of electromagnetic propagation and shielding
 - Gain an understanding of industry shielding effectiveness standards and shielding material properties/selection

Qualifications You Must Have:
- Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.
 - U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract

Qualifications We Prefer:
- Be capable of hands-on troubleshooting using engineering lab equipment
 - Circuit board design experience including experience with schematic capture tools
 - Working knowledge of EM/circuit simulation tools
