Audiologist Fellowship – Adult Hearing Aids

Position Overview

Vanderbilt Health is seeking a highly motivated Audiologist Fellow to join our Adult Hearing Aids Fellowship Program, a competitive and compensated one-year fellowship designed to provide advanced clinical and research training in amplification, hearing loss management, and hearing healthcare innovation.

The fellowship combines comprehensive clinical service delivery, translational research participation, and professional development opportunities within one of the nation's leading healthcare systems. Through a combination of didactic instruction, mentorship, hands-on patient care, and scholarly activity, fellows will gain advanced expertise in adult amplification and hearing rehabilitation.

The successful applicant will commit to one calendar year (e.g., July 1 through June 30) of clinical and research training. The program includes both practical and educational experiences, including the opportunity to attend and audit Vanderbilt's three-course Amplification curriculum completed by Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) students.

Clinical Training Experience

The fellow will work alongside experienced clinical supervisors providing hearing aid-related services until competency for independent practice has been demonstrated. Once approved for independent clinical activities, the fellow will maintain an assigned patient schedule and may also devote a portion of their time to comprehensive audiology services beyond hearing aid management.

Clinical experiences are provided across Vanderbilt Health locations, including the main Nashville campus and regional clinics throughout Middle Tennessee, including Franklin, Tennessee.

Responsibilities may include:

Hearing aid evaluations and fittings
Follow-up hearing aid services and counseling
Hearing aid verification and validation procedures
Adult amplification management
Comprehensive audiologic care
Interdisciplinary collaboration with healthcare providers
Patient and family education

Research Experience

The fellow will participate in ongoing clinical and translational research through Vanderbilt Health's Hearing Aid Laboratory and affiliated research programs. In most cases, research involvement will include participation in existing protocols, although fellows may also have opportunities to develop and pursue projects of their own interest.

By the completion of the fellowship, fellows are expected to have contributed to scholarly activities with the goal of achieving co-authorship on at least one manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

Additional scholarly opportunities may include:

Presenting research at regional or national conferences
Assisting with research dissemination activities
Delivering educational lectures or presentations
Collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams
Contributing to grant-funded research initiatives

Research Laboratories and Resources

Hearing Aid Research Laboratory

The Hearing Aid Research Laboratory is dedicated to advancing the evaluation and refinement of hearing aid and cochlear implant technologies. Research efforts focus on:

Amplification selection, fitting, and adjustment strategies
Patient counseling techniques
Hearing healthcare accessibility and affordability
Signal processing advancements
Hearing protection technologies
Cochlear implant outcomes
Listening experiences among individuals with normal and impaired hearing

The laboratory includes dedicated research space equipped with comprehensive audiometric and hearing aid evaluation systems.

Hearing and Affect Perception Laboratory

This laboratory focuses on hearing aid technologies for adults and children, with specific emphasis on:

Speech recognition
Listening effort
Emotion perception
Hearing technology outcomes

Research facilities include custom sound-treated environments designed to support advanced hearing science investigations.

Reverberation Chamber Laboratory

The Reverberation Chamber Laboratory is a stand-alone, computer-controlled research environment capable of simulating a wide variety of real-world acoustic conditions.

Features include:

Diffuse sound-field generation
Adjustable reverberation times ranging from approximately 2.3 seconds to less than 0.3 seconds
Flexible loudspeaker configurations
Controlled listening environment simulations

The laboratory supports investigations examining hearing and amplification performance across diverse listening settings.

Anechoic Chamber Laboratory

The Anechoic Chamber Laboratory is designed for psychoacoustic experimentation in free sound-field conditions.

Key features include:

Fiberglass wedge-lined surfaces
Low-frequency cutoff of approximately 100 Hz
Computer-controlled testing environment
Circular array of 64 loudspeakers spanning 360 degrees

This facility supports advanced auditory perception and hearing technology research.

Qualifications

Required

Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from an accredited program
ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A)
Eligibility for Tennessee Audiology Licensure, with licensure obtained prior to hire
Demonstrated interest in adult amplification and hearing healthcare
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Interest in research and scholarly activities

Preferred

Previous involvement in clinical or translational research
Scientific writing, publication, or presentation experience
Experience with hearing aid technologies and adult amplification services
