Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

The responsibility of the Global Packaging Engineering Co-Op Intern is to learn and apply packaging best practices and processes to the set given projects for the OCS Packaging program. Receive on-the-job training on overall packaging strategies and processes through work assignments.


The purpose of this position is to collaborate, design, validate and provide support on packaging solutions that encompass 3 key areas around cost savings, sustainability, and meeting customer requirements.  All of these areas are integral parts of the OCS Packaging Program within Corning and include the standardization and optimization of existing packaging solutions to deliver improvements in cost, capability, and quality, and providing manufacturing and commercial support for packaging related issues.  The Packaging Intern will collaborate with packaging engineers, along with internal and external partners to identify appropriate packaging materials and validate packaging designs that meet specifications and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • To apply packaging development skills and knowledge to assigned projects.
  • The candidate should be able to utilize and build on solid packaging fundamentals to complete his/her tasks.
  • Understand the total cost of packaging, including but not limited to materials, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, and sustainability.
  • Identify and execute packaging improvement opportunities to deliver cost, quality, and capability improvements for new and existing products
  • Testing and validation of new package designs and ensure product reliability
  • Generate appropriate technical documentation to support packaging design and process changes
  • Interface with packaging material solution vendors to identify and develop potential packaging solutions
  • Support and collaborate with other packaging engineers within and across global regions
  • Provide technical expertise to support manufacturing packaging issues or customer quality related issues related to packaging

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Pursuing a degree in Packaging Engineering or of a comparable discipline acceptable
  • Relevant experience a plus.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
